Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia Go Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update rolling out

The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean updates has begun rolling out for the Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia Go. This will bring considerable improvement to performance for the two devices – Project Butter is included with Jelly Bean which makes the Android interface run much quicker.

The Xperia P and Xperia Go are midrange handsets, but make a much more attractive proposition to would-be buyers now that they run Jelly Bean. Clove is currently offering a free 60 day trial of Son’y Music Unlimited service with the Xperia Go, which rivals Spotify with the large catalogue that it offers.

The Sony Xperia Go is one of the first IP67 rated handsets to be updated to Jelly Bean, you can see a video of it being put through its paces below.

Sony confirms Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Xperia T, Xperia S and most other 2012 Xperias, coming 2013.

Sony has confirmed via its product blog that the majority of its 2012 Xperia line-up will be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The first updates will begin rolling out in Q1 2013.

The first to get the upgrade will be the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V, with Sony approximating a rollout beginning ‘mid Q1 2013’.

The other handsets that will be upgraded to Jelly Bean are: Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia go and Xperia J. A timeframe has not yet been provided, but given the updates for the T and other devices is scheduled for mid-Q1, a reasonable expectation for the other devices would be early to mid Q2.

Sony has also confirmed that its 2011 range will not be updated to Jelly Bean:

We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.

Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand. We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.

We’ll let you know as soon as any of the Jelly Bean updates are rolling out.

Sony Xperia GO, U and Sola to get ICS update this week

Sony has confirmed that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will begin rolling out this week for the Xperia Go, Xperia U and Xperia Sola.

The rollout will first be available for unlocked/international handsets, including those that are available to purchase from the Clove website. Network updates should then follow shortly after.

As well as updating the handsets from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich, Sony has also included some nice new features with the firmware upgrade. The Walkman app is updated, bringing improved albums and media suites, while the Xperia Sola will have a new ‘Glove mode’, which makes it possible to use the handset whilst wearing a pair of gloves.

This video may be filmed in German, but an IP67 protection rating knows no language barriers. See the Sony Xperia Go put through its paces in some rather creative fashions in the video below. While we have every faith in the resilience displayed by the Go in the video, we will not be held liable for any damage incurred as a result of the following tests being replicated.

Sony Xperia Go vs Motorola DEFY+

How do these two IP67-rated smartphones compare on paper?

The Motorola DEFY set the standard for ruggedised devices when it was released back in 2010. It’s seen several challengers arise since then and the latest iteration of Motorola’s ‘lifeproof’ handset, the DEFY+ JCB edition, defends its IP67 crown against the brand new Sony Xperia Go. The Go is Sony’s second water and dust resistant handset, following in the footsteps of the Xperia Active, which was launched late last year.
