This comparison of the Samsung Omnia W and Nokia Lumia 710 comes courtesy of Clove Blog reader Gnam, who has kindly sent over his thoughts having used both handsets. If you’re weighing up purchasing either of these devices (or in-fact any other Windows Phone device), this is a must read article:
I initially bought the Samsung Omnia W because:
a) it had a bigger battery;
b) I thought the Super AMOLED screen would be better in sunlight;
c) it looked more “professional” with a thinner metal-like finish compared to the funky-chunky Nokia.
I kept it for 4 days before selling it on to a business colleague. I then bought myself the Nokia Lumia 710 instead.
What have I gained and what have I lost?
1) Whereas the Omnia W always felt like it was about to shoot out of my hand like a wet bar of soap, the Lumia 710 has a grippy, rubbery back cover. I felt that the Omnia W was too thin and too square on the edges which made it awkward to hold. I always had the uncomfortable feeling that it was 2 seconds away from being fumbled and dropped to the ground. And I could not easily find a case or protective cover which could have helped improve the situation and give some peace of mind. The Lumia 710 instead feels great in the hand and I probably won’t even bother with buying a protective case.
2) My experience with the Omnia W was brief but I found it difficult to read the display when outdoors. The screen technology used on the Lumia 710 seems to favour readability under the sun. Of course, the Omnia W had much more vivid colours indoors, indeed it took me a few days to get over the poorer colour saturation on the Lumia.
