Palm Centro Review: 2012

Tech Flashback

“I have to say that my first impressions are extremely positive and that, from a design point of view, the Centro is a classy little smartphone that outshines most of its rivals.”

centro

Those are my words from January 2009. The Centro was released on October 14, 2007. The first iPhone was released on June 29, 2007. What the hell was I thinking when I wrote the words above?

I know what I was thinking. I was thinking that this was how phones were back then and even though it wasn’t the best Palm had produced, it was competitive. Simon mentioned on LIM that he had a Centro that he was disposing of and so I took the opportunity to pay a nominal amount to relive the old days. To be fair, he didn’t want anything for it, but I wanted to step back and this was the perfect way to do it.

How quickly we forget.

HP Touchstone Charging Docks In Stock At Clove

image

We weren’t able to get any of the HP Pre 3 or HP TouchPad stock in in the end, but we do have plenty of the HP Touchstone Charging Dock. The Touchstone is a great way to charge your device and its definitely worth picking one up if you have got a Pre 3. It’s also compatible with some of the older Palm handsets, but you may need a replacement back cover in order for it to work.

Features of HP Touchstone Charging Dock
  • Non-slip material securely fastens dock to tables, desks, and other surfaces, and prevents dock from moving when phone is removed
  • Magnets align your phone in the correct position for charging, whether in portrait or landscape mode
  • No cables or connectors required to attach your phone to the dock
  • Charges device in approximately four hours

HP Open to cutting deals with the likes of HTC on webOS

imageToday, Mobile Magazine, the trade publication from www.mobiletoday.co.uk landed on my desk and I have come across an interesting article.

So, we all know that HP bought out Palm in a £730m and took over their webOS platform.

They announced the Palm Pre Veer, Pre 3 and TouchPad but it seems HP are so keen to develop webOS that wouldn’t rule out talks with the likes of HTC.

HP CEO Leo Apotheker, speaking at the All Things Digital Conference, said there was no reason to limit what he described ad an outstanding operating system to HP hardware.

When asked if HTC would let rivals such as HTC use the OS to launch a webOS phone, Apotherker said “That is certainly something that we would entertain”.  He added HP plans to make the webOS platform across a range of the manufacturers devices.

He also added ”why wouldn’t we make it available to other people”

HP plans to put webOS on devices such as laptops as well Windows. “It will go on every PC that we’ll ship …in the beginning webOS will sit on top of Windows, but the intention to get it out there on every PC’.

Quite interesting I think you would agree?  Certainly mix some things up a bit.  Would HTC ever drop Android for webOS or take on another platform?

Amazon steps up again with Cloud Music Player

image

Earlier this week online giant Amazon unveiled an online cloud music service that allows users to upload songs and then play them back on a range of devices, including Android, BlackBerry and Palm smartphones.

This looks to be another clever move from the retail expert, which last week launched its own Android app store. Interestingly, Amazon has beaten Google and Apple past the post, with the other two also rumoured to be developing similar services.

At the moment, the new Amazon Cloud Player is only available in the US, but hopefully it won’t be too long before we see it in other markets. The new service gives users 5GB of storage (approximately 1200 tracks), but users can pay for a larger storage capacity if desired.

Amazon isn’t the first company to offer a cloud based music service, other companies such as mSpot and AudioBox also do the same. However, launching a cloud-based music service is undoubtedly a good move for Amazon, which already offers a music shopping service. Anyone who purchases an Amazon MP3 album has their storage allowance upgraded to 20GB. Further Amazon MP3 purchases are then automatically saved to the Cloud Player Service but do not count towards the storage quota.

Amazon already offers almost anything that you could want to buy in terms of physical goods and with the launch of an Android Appstore and the new music service, it  looks to offer an even more complete service in terms of digital goods – buying a few bits for the house, why not buy your smartphone apps and music at the same time – and store it in a place where you can always have access to it?

Between Google, Apple and Amazon, one could argue that Amazon is best placed to offer such a music service as it already has so much of the infrastructure in place. Provided that it can develop its app store and cloud player to work as well as the rest of its site, it could be on to a real winner.

It has been rumoured that Amazon is also developing its own Android device, which would make sense as it could then offer even more integration of its services.

Pre 2 from Palm–Unboxed

The Palm Pre 2 is not the latest and greatest device, we know this.  However the Pre 2 uses what is likely to become a very popular OS, webOS.

Created by Palm and now owned by HP, over the coming years HP will be pushing this OS heavily and we will no doubt see it on a multitude of devices.

It is a very easy to understand system, that feels natural and makes sense.  Whilst it has not been adopted massively at the moment it does have the potential too be, it is simply the case of getting more users and this will increase with the new HP devices, especially the TouchPad coming later this year.

We enlisted the help of tech reviewer Lockwoodkatie who has put together the following unboxing and short review of the Pre 2.  Check it out below to see the Pre 2 and webOS in action.

Palm Pre 2 Review

Compliments to Patrick from TracyAndMatt for this review of the Palm Pre 2.

The following is an extract from the review, you can head over to the Clove website or TracyandMatt.co.uk to read the review in full.

The Palm Pre 2 is the first refresh of the original Palm Pre since Palm was taken over by HP.   Initially, I was unsure whether or not I would like it as I had heard great stories from other reviewers about webOS but I had also heard horror stories about the Pre’s poor hardware and keyboard.

First impressions of the Pre 2 were mixed. I do agree that the hardware of the Pre 2 is lacking in the quality department but it wasn’t as bad as I’d first feared. But my first go with webOS far exceeded my expectations. Very simple, clean and overall a brilliant OS. I’ll go into more detail about the OS later in this review.

The Palm Pre 2, just like the original Pre, fits comfortably into the palm of your hand (if you’ll pardon the pun). The Pre 2 is one of the smaller handsets on the market with just a 3.1″ screen. In the palm, the Pre 2 feels solid but when you start to squeeze the handset, the plastic seems to creak and squeak with pain. The buttons round the outside feel decent but nothing stands out about their quality or lack thereof.
