Touch

Touch is important in the smartphone world because it accounts for 100% of our interactions with our devices. Whether it is selecting text, zooming photos or playing games, touch is everything.

Capacitive screens and modern mobile software make the experience feel natural to the point that you do not even consider what goes on below your finger and it is a world away from phones of the past.

One area that is still not liked by some smartphone users are the touch keyboards that modern smartphones employ. Because the manufacturers, quite rightly, want to make the screens dominate as much of the form as possible, touch keyboards are a requirement unless you have a specific need for a BlackBerry or a hardware-keyboarded Android phone.

On Android you can replace the standard touch keyboard with a variety of different solutions; from clever apps that let you type without ever lifting your finger from the screen to solutions designed to mimic the keyboards of other phones i.e. iPhone, the choice is yours and you can spend as long as you need finding the perfect solution for you. However, if there is no perfect solution because you can’t get the hang of touch screen keyboards, you have two choices-

You can buy a smartphone with a hardware keyboard of which the Motorola Pro Plus is a very good example.

Or you can try using your voice. Apple has received countless headlines for its Siri service, but the voice recognition features on Android and Windows Phone are worthy contenders for most basic tasks. As we learn to get over our inhibitions and feel more comfortable speaking to our phones in public, the day may come when touch is used for what it is really designed for; selection, navigation and general one-touch tasks. The day may come when natural language software is accurate enough to let us simply speak and to not try typing on the tiniest of keyboards on a flat surface. Let’s hope it comes soon.

Motorola Pro +–Quick Review

Shaun at Lost in Mobile has had a quick hands on with the Motorola Pro + and has written up some of his thoughts HERE.  But for those who want a quick summary, his conclusion is as follows:

I haven’t had the phone for long enough to do a detailed review, but after three days I can safely say that this is the most surprising smart phone I have used this year. It is a breakthrough device and one that proves that Android can be used in the business world. This isn’t a full review, but more an overview of how it felt to use over a period of days. The price is good, the specifications are high, but most of all it is an absolute pleasure to use. Balance is key when a smartphone is built and too many try to pack in specifications when they simply are not needed. The sensitive use of mid-range specifications enclosed in a unique design makes this the perfect smartphone for anyone who needs to communicate throughout the day. It really does feel like a Blackberry, but a Blackberry with an operating system inside you actually want to use. I love this phone.

Motorola Pro Canned, Motorola Pro+ Incoming

image

Motorola yesterday announced the Motorola Pro+, effectively replacing the Motorola Pro which will not now see a UK release. It is slightly disappointing news regarding the Pro, the situation has chopped and changed somewhat since its announcement at MWC in February, but at least there is a follow up device on its way.

Back in April we reported that the Motorola Pro would no longer come to the UK, only to be told in June that the decision had been reversed and the Pro was back on track for a UK release. It wouldn’t make sense to launch one handset, only to release a successor shortly after, so the Motorola Pro will not now come to the UK. However, the Motorola Pro+ will come to the UK and is expected to be available late October/early November. We’’ have the Motorola Pro+ available to pre-order on the Clove website later today. In the meantime, checkout the teaser video and spec sheet below.

Motorola Pro Promotional Video

Earlier this week Motorola announced the Pro, an android smartphone with a touch screen and front facing QWERTY keyboard.

Reminiscent of the HP iPAQ 65/69xx form factor he Motorola Pro is already receiving a lot of interest as it looks to serve a niche segment of the market which has not successfully been serviced by any other manufacturer.

Many users wish for n Android device but want a BlackBerry esq form factor, the Motorola Pro is the answer.  They have released a promotional video highlighting some of the key features, check it out below:
