Sony Xperia Go vs Motorola DEFY+

How do these two IP67-rated smartphones compare on paper?

The Motorola DEFY set the standard for ruggedised devices when it was released back in 2010. It’s seen several challengers arise since then and the latest iteration of Motorola’s ‘lifeproof’ handset, the DEFY+ JCB edition, defends its IP67 crown against the brand new Sony Xperia Go. The Go is Sony’s second water and dust resistant handset, following in the footsteps of the Xperia Active, which was launched late last year.

JCB Pro-Smart vs Motorola Defy Plus

If you often find yourself in a challenging environment – perhaps you work outdoors, exposed to the elements or indoors in a dusty environment – you might always have considered today’s fragile smartphones a tad impractical.

Fortunately, manufacturers including Motorola and JCB have produced products with exactly you in mind. In this post we’ll compare two of the leading rugged smartphones on the market, the JCB Pro-Smart and Motorola DEFY Plus.

Screen Size

JCB Pro-Smart

3.2 Inches

Motorola Defy+

3.7 Inches

The Motorola Defy+ comes equipped with a 3.7” Corning ‘Gorilla Glass’ scratch resistant touchscreen compared to the 3.2” scratch resistant touchscreen found on the JCB Pro-Smart.

Corning Gorilla Glass 2 Break Test

image

Corning has officially announced Gorilla Glass 2 at CES 2012 [official press release here]. Its legendary Gorilla Glass has contributed to the success of handsets such as the Motorola DEFY+, offering the sturdiest display available in a smartphone. The new Gorilla Glass 2 is around 20% stronger and 20% thinner than its predecessor, plus it is lighter and easier to make. Corning expects its new fortified glass to be incorporated into smartphones that are released towards the end of Q3 2012. In the meantime, checkout the hands-on break test photos that Slashgear has posted from CES.

Motorola DEFY+ v’s Motorola DEFY+ JCB Edition

A quick video explaining the differences between the Motorola DEFY+ and the Motorola DEFY+ JCB Edition.

Get a Motorola DEFY+ with a 24 month warranty instead of 12

The Motorola DEFY+ is a great value handset that is designed to live up to the perils of life.  It can withstand knocks, bumps, being dropped, getting wet and more.

However one of the small downsides to this device is the fact that it has only a 12 month warranty.

Well there is a way to get a 24 month warranty if your willing to spend about £20 more (£1.60 per month for another 12 months warranty).

The solution, buy a JCB Edition Motorola DEFY+.

It is exactly the same as the Motorola DEFY + but comes with:

  • 24 month (2 year) warranty as opposed to the standard 12 month (1 year) Motorola warranty.
  • Exclusive JCB branded skin with shock absorption, designed specifically for the DEFY
  • Exclusive JCB application which includes 6 tools ( Therodolite, Spirit Level, Torch and Decibel Reader) and a B&Q store locator
  • Exclusive JCB packaging

You may not want the JCB element, so here is what you do.  Buy the JCB edition DEFY+ but the packaging is for sale and shipping purposes so easily removed.  The case can be removed and the app can be deleted.  This way, although you pay a little more for the phone, you still get the 24 month warranty – simple!
