HTC One X & One S Jelly Bean updates to begin rolling out this month

Along with announcing the HTC One X+ today, HTC has confirmed that the Jelly Bean update for the HTC One X and HTC One S ‘is scheduled begin rolling out this month’. Experience has taught us to take up date schedules with a pinch of salt, but the good news is that this is the most precise date we’ve had for the update so far and given HTC’s estimated timeframe, we can certainly expect international versions of the handset to receive the update by the end of November. Also included with the Jelly Bean update will be HTC Sense 4+, which will add some more features to the company’s custom Android skin. Unfortunately there has been no mention of the JB update for the HTC One V, but we’ll let you know as soon as we’ve had any news.

HTC One Series to be PlayStation certified

Sony yesterday announced that its PlayStation Suite would not only be renamed to PlayStation Mobile, but that it will be opening up the platform to other Android manufacturers. The news was delivered at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), where Sony also announced that HTC would be the first manufacturer (other than itself, of course) to be PlayStation certified for its devices.

HTC One S vs Sony Xperia S– smartphone comparison

HTC One S vs Sony Xperia S

Rather than pit Sony’s latest and greatest against HTC’s One X, we though it would be much fairer if it picked on someone its own size (and price…). Enter the HTC One S; the One X’s smaller, cheaper and some might say sexier brother.

Aesthetics

The Xperia S is certainly a striking looking phone with its monolithic square profile and translucent band giving it a very distinct profile compared to its competitors. The One S goes for a more understated look with rounded edges, although its space-age micro-arc oxidised casing gives the handset a pleasing, premium feel above that of even much more expensive handsets. Let’s see what they have to offer on the inside:

Sony prides itself on excelling in all things visual these days, and the screen on the Xperia S is no exception. It makes full use of the Bravia technology developed for its high end TV’s and this expert knowledge is applied to its smartphones.

HTC One X vs HTC One S

Veteran smartphone reviewer Shaun McGill has been using both the HTC One X and the HTC One S over the last couple of weeks. If you’re weighing up a choice between these two handsets, this is a must read post. Here’s his comparison.

HTC One X vs HTC One S:

The HTC One S will not be getting anywhere near the same amount of attention the One X has been getting, but for me it has turned out to be a surprise package. I received both phones from Clove and put the One S to one side while I concentrated on the fantastic screen on the X. After a couple of days I turned my attention to it and was surprised at how good it felt.

It has a generous 4.3″ screen and is only 8mm deep. I cannot tell you how thin a phone this size feels, but HTC has included some clever design choices that work together to create what is a very positive experience when in the hand. The depth is perfect for a device like this and marries well to the curved edges creating a slab that feels like a perfectly crushed pebble. The metal casing is what makes the phone feel so rigid in spite of the minimal depth and this together it creates a superb form factor.
