Motorola DEFY Review

DEFY_Black_L3Qtr_Home_EMEA_m

Thanks to Vince at TracyAndMatt for this thorough review of the Motorola DEFY. You can read an extract review below, the entire plain text version can be read here on our website or the original review with images can be found here.

In terms of strength, Coring and Motorola have really outdone themselves in the tough tests and I am quite impressed that the Defy really is a ‘Lifeproof’ phone.”

Beginning with the front, there’s the 3.7 inch touchscreen dominating almost all of the front. Not much bezel here; it makes the device nice and compact, whilst making the screen look bigger. Above the screen there’s a small earpiece hole, proximity sensor, light sensor, and notification LED. Below it there’s a touch sensitive row of standard Android buttons – menu, home, back and search. On the left, there are some industrial looking screws, and a stubby little volume rocker. On the right, there’s three more screws, and a rubber sealed micro USB port for charging and syncing that sits behind a beefy plastic door.

The Motorola Defy joins the onslaught of devices that Motorola are pushing into the Android space, but their designs have been quite different and interesting (such as the Backflip or the XT720). The Defy seems to continue the trend of uniqueness – Motorola have designed this one to ‘defy’ water, dust, sharp objects and even the occasional hard drop. Getting the Defy for review built up a bit of excitement in me as I knew it would be fun to test the claims!

Dell Streak’s éclair upgrade not as sweet as first thought

The Dell Streak is a great bit of kit, bridging the gap between Android smartphone and tablet computer and has seen a considerable success as an O2 exclusive since it’s launch last month. One gripe many had with the original specifications was that it shipped with the now (twice) superseded Android 1.6 – not to worry said Dell, the upgrade will be rapidly available. True to their word the 2.1 upgrade went live on Monday and users have been busy downloading and installing.

image Android 2.1 adds 720p video recording, improved multi-touch functionality, support for applications designed for 2.0 system and a general improvement to performance and response times. This is a stepping stone to the eventual move to the anticipated and promised 2.2 Froyo on the device.

Unfortunately it appears not everything has gone according to plan, with the Dell and O2 forums filled with reports of problems from frustrated users. The most common issues centre around PC synchronisation, Windows Media Video playback and the Facebook widget however other silly problems like the reversal of volume controls sit next to more serious bugs including missing browser controls or the device hanging on the start-up screen. Also it seems that the instructions for installation may not have been as user friendly or in depth as they should have been with many users neglecting to backup data before starting – something that may seem like common sense but remember, Android has been marketed at the less technically savvy consumer.

There has been no word yet from Dell concerning patches to the update to counter any of these problems, however some workarounds have been posted on the Dell Forums. An update or announcement is expected soon

HTC Wildfire Review

Thanks to Shaun at PDA247 for another reliable review.

“a good budget smartphone that will suit those who want to move up from the feature phone world without paying a fortune”

"I have had a constant HSDPA signal in my house which is unheard of”

The HTC Wildfire is the latest in a long line of HTC Android devices sporting a name that would be more suited to an after shave lotion. We have had ‘Tattoo’, ‘Hero’, ‘Legend’ and the ‘Desire’ and it’s as if HTC has employed someone called Flavio who sweeps into the office, flicks his hair over his pin-striped tank top, and announces the name for the next HTC Android smartphone. “We shall call it the ‘HTC Love Probe’! to which he receives a smattering of applause from sensible people who wonder what on Earth is going on. Curiously HTC has stuck with quite boring names for its Windows Mobile devices; the Touch Pro, HD and Snap are just a few examples. Anyway, whatever it is called does not really matter because it’s the quality of the hardware and software that counts. I won’t go into much detail about the software because it is running Android 2.1 and I covered this heavily in my Samsung Galaxy S review . Like Samsung, HTC adds its own flavour to the mix and I will look at these, but you should know what you are getting with Android these days.

The box is typically Apple HTC and comes with the bare minimum of accessories. You get a pair of 3.5mm standard headphones, a USB charge/sync cable and a curiously designed AC adaptor. The USB part has to be twisted on to connect to the three pronged plug which looks great, but can be inconvenient if you happen to have all of your plugs sat under a desk with little room above them, like me. On the plus side it does mean that the plug will fit into a multiple socket without any problems so it will suit most people. Of course it looks daft sticking out of a wall and little children will likely break it on the first day, but you can charge via USB and that is likely to be the most used solution anyway.

HTC announce official ETA for Desire, Legend and Wildfire Android 2.2 Update

via Androidbloke

android_froyo Along with today’s news that the Hero 2.1 update is now available, as well as the 2.2 update for the Nexus One, comes the announcement that Android 2.2 will be available for the HTC Desire, HTC Legend and HTC Wildfire by the end of Q3.

This is the official statement that HTC have released with regards to the update:

We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible. We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3.

Here’s a recap of the Android 2.2 introduction video:

HTC Hero 2.1 Update Now Available (Both Packages)!

HTC_Hero_Front

The HTC Hero Android 2.1 update has been a while in coming but it is now finally available (both packages). In order to install the update, you first need to go to the HTC support section and install the FIRST package. This then prepares your device for the SECOND package, which is sent over the air (your device is prompted to download it when it next checks for updates). However, if you have already installed the first package, you can manually search for (and download) the second package by navigating to:

Settings> About Phone> System software updates> Check Now.

The device will then check for updates and you will be prompted to download the update. Please be aware that you should use a WiFi connection in order to save on data usage. It is also advisable to backup any important data on the device as it may be wiped during installation. Once you begin the download and installation, it takes about 15 minutes. Once its complete your Hero is updated to Android 2.1!
