Smartest smartphone user revealed!

Thursday, July 8, 2010
BlackBerry Bold 9700 winner James Howell

James Howell is the winner of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 competition.

Back in April, we launched a search for the smartest business use of a smartphone.

The prize for one lucky winner was a brand new BlackBerry Bold 9700, and with more than 200 entries the competition was stiff.

What was clear from the wide variety of entries was just how versatile today’s smartphones are, not to mention how innovative their owners can be. Choosing the winner was a very difficult decision for the Clove Technology team.

However, the ultimate winner was James Howell, who works in the IT department of a school. James told us: “Working in a school, money for devices and equipment is limited. I use my BlackBerry to keep track of support requests, monitor the status of hardware around the site, and to switch on Bluetooth to find out when students are using their phones and shouldn’t be!”

Chris Love from Clove said: “It was great to see James win this prize of a Blackberry 9700, we even made it more special by sending him one of the white versions, so very unique! I hope it helps James further with his work at school, well done! Congratulations to the 10 runners up as well.”

James was delighted to receive his prize, a BlackBerry Bold 9700 and bag of BlackBerry goodies.

Ten lucky runners up won a bag of BlackBerry accessories.

Among the favourite entries were Hazel Rigiazo, a hairdresser whose smartphone features an app to enable customers to see what a new hairstyle would look like and whether it would suit them, Khaled Khalil, who photographed notes on a whiteboard during a meeting and emailed them to participants so that everyone had full notes, Luke Harwood, who uses his smartphone to book and organise gigs for his band, and junior doctor Abby Parish, who uses hers to refer to online papers and journals to assist in the treatment of her patients.

We also particularly liked the entry from Neil Tattersall, a busy dad who works from home. By playing lullabies through his smartphone’s speakers, he’s able to get his toddler to sleep – so he can get on with some work!

Unsurprisingly, the HTC Desire features in a few categories and its certainly got my vote for Phone of the Year!

Win a BlackBerry Bold 9700!

Win a BlackBerry Bold 9700!

Time is running out to enter Clove Technology’s competition to find the smartest business use of a smartphone and win a BlackBerry Bold 9700 and back of BB Bold accessories.

If you have used your smartphone in an innovative or quirky way for business, Clove Technology want to know. The Bournemouth smartphone specialists are compiling a list of the top ten most innovative business uses of such devices as the BlackBerry or HTC Desire and the best one, as judged by Clove’s expert team, will win a brand spanking new BlackBerry Bold 9700 and goodie bag.

Ten runners up get a goodie back of BB Bold accessories. The top entries will also be posted on Clove Technology’s blog.

BlackBerry smartphones have been the device of choice for business users for some time now. Their versatility, reliability and multitude of functions have ensured that, despite the increasing number of smartphones in the market, the BlackBerry Bold remains the leading smartphone for business.

Mike Lazaridis, founder and CEO of BlackBerry manufacturers Research In Motion (RIM) claimed at the recent Mobile World Conference that BlackBerry was the only smartphone to be relied on in a crisis. Because BlackBerry’s email service uses less capacity than rivals such as the iPhone, he told the Daily Telegraph, mobile networks under pressure from growing demand for bandwidth can carry five BlackBerries for every one iPhone.

Right now, many Prospective Parliamentary Candidates are using their BlackBerry smartphones and other such devices to give live updates as they pound the campaign beat.

In the US, water utility companies have been saving time and money by using BlackBerry smartphones to display system maps and collect all kinds of data while out in the field. Meanwhile, a San Diego medical research organisation has recommended the use of smartphones in healthcare to help keep patients out of hospital – recording snoring to detect sleep apnoea or scanning barcodes on food packaging for an instant calorie count.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is RIM’s most sophisticated and functional device. The keyboard has a completely natural feel when inputting text for email or instant messaging on the move, while the leather back not only feels extremely luxurious but also aids grip and gives the smartphone increased durability.

Are you smartphone smart? Share your innovation and win a BlackBerry Bold 9700 !!!

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Smartphone users are proving themselves to be an innovative bunch. Whether their weapon of choice is a BlackBerry, iPhone, Android or Nokia E61, smartphone fans the world over are coming up increasingly avant-garde uses for their mobile devices. Today we are launching a quest to find the top ten most innovative business uses of a smartphone. The prize for the best entry is a brand new BlackBerry 9700.

From MPs tweeting in the House of Commons to a BBC newsreader beating a technology failure by reading the headlines from her iPhone, there’s an abundance of inventive uses of a handheld. We are compiling our Top Ten chart of innovative business uses of a smartphone, which will be published on our blog in May. Other great examples of innovative and alternative uses of smartphones for business purposes include the US water utility companies that have been saving time and money by using BlackBerry smartphones to display system maps and collect all kinds of data while out in the field. Meanwhile, a San Diego medical research organisation has recommended the use of smartphones in healthcare to help keep patients out of hospital – recording snoring to detect sleep apnoea or scanning barcodes on food packaging for an instant calorie count.

Think you can do better? Enter our competition today, by submitting your innovative idea to http://competitions.clove.co.uk/

In the meantime, here are some of our favourite business smartphone stories – with some successes and some BlackBerry boo-boos.

  • Bricker & Eckler, a US law firm, use BlackBerries to keep track of email, calendars and contacts while in the courtroom. While use of mobile phones is banned in court, the Ohio firm is able to use the BlackBerry’s other functions to receive last-minute alerts and updates, increasing customer satisfaction and staff productivity.
  • Conservative MP Alistair Burt read out a letter about Criminal Record Bureau checks from his BlackBerry during a debate on anti-social behaviour in parliament. However, Deputy Speaker Sir Michael Lord wasn’t impressed and said the practice should be discouraged.
  • The iCape is an interesting invention marketed at American hair salons. It’s a cape with a clear vinyl front in the lap area designed so that keen business people can keep in touch with their emails even when having their hair cut – without the danger of getting a hairy BlackBerry (or getting hair products on it).
  • CN, a road and rail dispatch service that operates in the US and Canada, utilised the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution to modernise their dispatch business. Each of the 350 drivers was equipped with a BlackBerry device, logging on to the BlackBerry server every time they arrive or leave a destination, enabling easier scheduling of work and more accuracy in reporting to customers.
  • Radio 3 newsreader Alison Roper wasn’t fazed when the BBC’s computer systems crashed just before a news bulletin. While colleagues panicked, Alison quickly whipped out her iPhone and read the news from that.
  • Keen blogger and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Tracey Crouch learned that there are some places it’s not a good idea to use your smartphone when she dropped her BlackBerry down the loo without realising until too late – after she had pulled the flush.
