HP planning to enter the smartphone market

HP-logoSpeaking to Fox Business Network Meg Whitman HP’s chief executive has confirmed that they are working on a smartphone product.

She said “We have to ultimately offer a smartphone because in many countries of the world that would be your first computing device… We are a computing company we have to take advantage of that form factor.”

Recognizing the failures with the previous HP Pre 3, where it received little support and uptake, she indicated that the project had to be better and right rather than faster to market.

There was no indication which operating system the product will potentially use.  It is however likely that it will be Windows Phone 8, or Android.

Apple iPhone 5 to use Nano SIM cards

The soon to be released iPhone 5 will be utilising a new SIM card standard.  This means that you won’t be able to transfer an existing SIM from your previous handset into the Apple iPhone 5.  Instead you will need to obtain a Nano SIM card, which as the name suggests has smaller dimensions than previous variations.  The Nano SIM card measures just 12.3 mm x 8.8 mm.

Previously with the change to Micro SIM cards it was possible to use a cutter to modify your existing SIM. It is unlikely that this will be possible with the switch to Nano SIM cards, as it has been reported that they are also thinner at just 0.67 mm.

The adoption of the Nano SIM card standard means that Apple has had a bit of extra space available, when designing the iPhone 5.  This has enabled them to make the iPhone 5 thinner than previous models.  It is likely that we will see other manufacturers adopting this standard, as was the case with Micro SIM.

Nokia City Lens – Augmented Reality

During the recent “SwitchtoLumia” event, Nokia concentrated on promoting the benefits of the Lumia 920.  One of these benefits is Nokia City Lens which is an augmented reality application.  The demonstration during the event showed how this application has been designed to use the Windows Phone 8 and Nokia technology.

If you want to find a local restaurant Nokia City Lens provides an overlay on the camera screen showing all the places when you can eat.  When you have selected the restaurant which you wish to visit you can call in advance to book a table.  Or you can use the detailed directions to walk there.

The information of your screen can be changed by tilting your handset.  With one of the options being to show all the local places to eat in a list and another being to show them on a 2D map.

Sony Xperia P to feature WhiteMagic

Sony Xperia P AngleHave you have ever experienced problems viewing your phone screen in bright sunlight?  If you have you may be interested to know that the forthcoming Sony Xperia P will feature new technology to help solve this problem.

Sony has called this new technology WhiteMagic and it promises to double the brightness of the screen, while maintaining power efficiency.  It does this by adding a fourth white sub pixel in addition to the common red, green and blue which displays have.

Screens create different colours by filtering light through the sub-pixels in varying proportions to compose the required colour.  In the case of white this is created by allowing light through all of the sub-pixels in the right proportions.  With the WhiteMagic technology the light is filtered through the white pixel.  This results in the brighter display and power saving properties.

Sony has additionally improved the power saving properties further by including outdoor and indoor modes for the brightness levels.  In outdoor mode the phone will prioritise the brightness to ensure the user has a clear viewing experience.  While the indoor mode intelligently analyses the individual content colour composition to ensure that no distortion occurs, at the same time as reducing the power usage by half.

This new technology makes the Sony Xperia P an ideal potential phone for anyone who spends most of their time outdoors.
