Clove Vlog #54 – Smartphones – It’s a buyers market

In the 54th vlog from Clove we discuss how at present it is a buyers market and there is plenty of choice.

Sony Xperia Z Tablet teardown

The Xperia Z tablet looks set to be the first premium built Android tablet of 2013 and follows on from the precedent in hardware design set by its little brother earlier this year. Featuring an IP57 rating, the Xperia Z tablet is both water and dust resistant as well as housing an impressive spec sheet that could make it the first mainstream Android tablet to not only rival Samsung’s high performance Galaxy Note 10.1 but also make an impression on Apple’s iPad range in terms of aesthetics.

Sony have released a teardown video for the Xperia Z tablet to show the construction and some of the parts involved. The video starts with a run down of some key specifications before pulling apart the device. It’s worth noting that doing this to your own Xperia Z tablet would of course void your warranty – only registered Sony engineers should perform the steps shown.

The Sony Xperia Z Tablet is currently set for a June 1st launch at £416.00 exc. VAT. Order yours today HERE

BlackBerry Q10: Battery Life

How good is the BlackBerry Q10 Battery Life?

BlackBerry Q10

According to BlackBerry, the Q10 should last up to two days without a charge and a good level of usage. It’s got a larger battery than BlackBerry’s touchscreen flagship, the Z10, plus it’s dark theme will help to conserve juice thanks to the AMOLED display.

Naturally the Q10 will have better battery life than other market leaders with their 5″ screens, but if a long lasting battery and improved productivity are more important to you than a big display, the Q10 is a worthwhile consideration. Of course, if you want even more battery than what the Q10 offers out of the box, there’s always the Q10 battery charging bundle available.

Let’s have a look at what some reviews have had to say about the battery life of the Q10′s 2100mAh battery:

CrackBerry

There’s no doubt in saying that CrackBerry were more than impressed with the Q10′s performance, calling its battery life ‘the best ever on a BlackBerry’. Here’s a few more lines on their initial thoughts:

“The Q10 battery comes in at 2100 mAh – that’s 16% bigger than 1800 mAh Z10 battery and over 70% bigger than the 1230 mAh battery of the Bold 9900. With the smaller screen size, dark theme option and other tweaks in the Q10 OS, we expect the battery life to be more than sufficient for both average and power users alike.

While we’ve been able to put the Q10 through the paces for this review, we haven’t had the chance to knock out a “real world” test of the battery just yet. What we can say is that the battery life here is awesome. Even with our constant use of the Q10, the battery has held up strong and made us proud.”

Dash mounted Nexus 7 Android tablet

Inspired by Ross McClardy’s AKA @mr_bridger Nexus 7 dash install that we blogged about here, our very own Jon Love (@jon_clove) decided to take on a similar install within his vehicle.

Jon replaces the factory fitted navigation unit and uses the Nexus 7 as a feature rich in car computer, pairing it with his phone to ensure it has internet connectivity and then uses the Nexus 7 for all manor of tasks from web browsing, to navigation to media playback when in the vehicle.

All in all he has opted for a slightly simpler removable solution in comparison to the more complicated fixed installation by @mr_bridger but he is very happy with the outcome.

You can see a full explanation of what he did and why here or just take a look at the following video he has put together.
