BlackBerry announces BBM Channels

BlackBerry ChannelsWe saw some big announcements at BlackBerry Live yesterday; BBM is coming to Android iOS and there’s a new budget BlackBerry to be released, the Q5. As well as this, BlackBerry has announced BBM Channels – a Twitter-like service for BlackBerry Messenger.

The beta release of BlackBerry Channels can be downloaded from BlackBerry Beta Zone.

With BBM Channels, organisations or individual users can create a stream on content to share and interact with others in real-time. To promote the beta launch of BBM Channels, Lewis Hamilton joined Thorsten Heins on stage to announce the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS channel.

The idea behind channels is that organisations can publish content and then discuss it directly with fans. For such organisations there are built-in tools to monitor engagement and assess followers. Channels can be managed directly from a BlackBerry handset or from the web.

For users, there is a new discovery tool for finding new channels, which can be shared using a BB Pin or QR code. There’s also the ability to subscribe to a channel – much like Twitter – so that you receive updates as soon as new content is published.

The new BBM Channels beta is available for smartphones running BlackBerry 10 (the Q10 and the Z10) and BlackBerry handsets running BlackBerry 5 OS through 7.1.

Be sure to let us know what you think if you give it a try!

Android phone screen sharing app–share your phone screen with your PC

Sometimes in life you do not realise how useful something is until you actually use something.  The following is one such example.

If you are like me, it is quite possible that you spend most of your day working at your desk with your phone sat beside you.

If you get a text message or want to view your phone content, you stop what you are doing on your PC and jump to the phone.

How about not touching the phone and doing everything from the desktop?!

You could be writing a word document on the PC, get a text message, just jump to the phone screen (on your computer), view and reply to the text message using you computer keyboard and mouse.

How about taking a screenshot of your device, or recording a video comprising of a number of actions on screen all from the desktop computer.  Makes life very simple wouldn’t you say?

The recent announcement of Samsung SideSync (more info HERE) allowed this as well as the ability to share content such as text between the PC and the Phone. The problem with this is that it works currently on selected Samsung computers.

However there is a similar and almost as powerful workaround that will work on a wider range of computers and smartphones….image

Xdadeveloper member mcallisaya has managed to allow smartphone users to share their phone screen on their PC with just a few simple steps

What you need to do is:

  1. Download the ‘Phone Screen Sharing’ app for the PC HERE
  2. Download and install onto your smartphone the ‘Phone Screen Sharing’ .apk file found HERE
  3. Run the ‘Phone Screen Sharing’ app on your smartphone and agree to the terms and conditions for the app.
  4. Connect the Smartphone using an original USB cable, and don´t use any USB hubs in the process.
  5. Enable USB debugging mode on your smarthphone.
  6. Start the ‘Phone Screen Sharing’ app installed in step 1 on your PC and let it complete any updates.
  7. Click “Next” on the Phone-window on your PC.
  8. Confirm any necessary notifications on the smartphone screen.
  9. If all is OK, then you will have the screen connected and you can use your mouse, keyboard and copy files from/to your smartphone.

Once connected you can take screenshots, record video and view the contents of the phone on your PC screen as well as share files from the desktop to the PC to the phone and vies versa.  The only things I could not do is copy text from the PC direct to the phone.

I tested a Samsung Galaxy S4 and a HTC One X on a Windows 7 computer, both worked straight away without issue.

See the following video that shows us navigating around the screen of the HTC One and then the Samsung S4. The video was recorded from the PC whilst controlling the phone on the PC.

I am sure you will agree this is a potentially powerful setup.  Especially if you review devices or need to record videos of how to do things on phones.  It could even be a sneaky way of doing things on your phone without your boss noticing!

You can find full information and more detailed discussion HERE at xdadevelopers from which this opportunity was created.

Nokia Lumia 925 vs Nokia Lumia 920 (brief comparison video)

Nokia yesterday announced the latest addition to its Lumia range, the Nokia Lumia 925, the first stock of which we are expecting to arrive in June.

The Lumia 925 is slimmer and lighter than the 920, plus its got an aluminium frame to add further slickness to its aesthetic improvements. We posted Nokia’s official adverts and demo videos yesterday should you wish to take a look.

In the video below, Windows Phone Central give us a quick hands on with the Lumia 925 and compare it to the Lumia 920. The difference in size is clear – the 925 is a lot slimmer – and we also get a look at the 925 with the wireless charging case attached to it.

BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android and iOS this summer

BlackBerry has announced that it plans to make its popular messaging service, BBM, available across multiple platforms this summer. The news emerged from BlackBerry live 2013, which kicked off yesterday in Orlando, Florida.

BlackBerry Messenger for Android

BlackBerry Messenger has long been one of the exclusive selling points of BlackBerry handsets. However, while the service useful initially as a USP, its lack of availability on other platforms has left room for rival services such as WhatsApp to gain considerable market share in the mobile messaging market.

The first release of BBM for Android and iOS (subject to approval from the Play Store and the App Store respectively) will make the service’s core features available to users, including:

  • Delivery reports/read notices
  • Multi-person messaging
  • Voice note sharing
  • BlackBerry groups, which can include up to 30 users and share calendar appointments, photos and more

Later on in 2013 BlackBerry expects to add functionality for its newly announced BlackBerry Channels (a Twitter-like service for BBM), voice chat and video chat to its Android/iOS apps, which will be free to download.

BlackBerry is not the only company trying to unify its messaging service at the moment. Facebook recently stepped up its offering with improvements to Facebook Messenger (which now includes free voice calls in some regions), WhatsApp does not yet have voice calling, but is the most widespread cross-platfrom messaging app in many regions, Skype has long offered free voice calls and is being integrated with more of Microsoft’s services, plus Google is expected to announce a massive update to its messaging portfolio at Google I/O this week.

It’ll be interesting to see which of the above makes it to the top first – a truly unified cross-platform messaging app would only leave room for one or two of these to be prevalent in the long run.

Nokia Lumia 925 announced

Nokia Lumia 925Nokia have today announced the latest addition to their Lumia Windows Phone range with the 925.

The stand out feature is the 8.7 megapixel PureView camera that will give some sensational images which you can view back on the 4.5” AMOLED display.

The camera uses a Carl Zeiss optics and award winning PureView technology  to obtain great shots even in low lights.

Additional features include action shot which lets you get a sequence of movements in one shot as well as having the ability to remove unwanted objects too with the eraser tool.

image

Make sure you do too also get the very best shot with Nokia Smart Camera Change Faces feature which allows you to combine your favourite expressions from a series of shots into one single photo.

We must not forget that this is too a full featured smartphone with Windows Phone 8, so emails, web browsing, etc are all part and parcel of the Lumia 925.

First stock is expected in June.  You can register your interest HERE.

Sony Xperia L now in stock

We mentioned on our blog only yesterday that the Sony Xperia L was due to arrive this week.

Good news, slightly ahead of schedule the Xperia L has landed and is now available for order and immediate dispatch.

Can I use my Samsung Galaxy S3 MHL/HDTV adapter with the S4?

In short the answer is YES.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 HDTV adapter works with the Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4.

The S4 HDTV adapter works with the S3 as well.

The S3 HDTV adapter has a 24Hz refresh rate whereas the S4 adapter has a 60Hz refresh rate. This is the key difference between the two. The S4 adapter creates a sharper on screen image.

The s4 does not need power to be connected for either MHL adapter to work, but it is advisable to avoid excessive battery drain.

When using either the S3 or S4 adapter with the Galaxy S3 you do need to have mains power connected.

See both adapters in action below.

Sony Xperia ZR not coming to the UK

imageSony Mobile have been coming on leaps and bounds with devices like the Xperia Z & SP and it seems that there is no stopping them with more and more devices like the Xperia L and the ZR being announced.

Initial thoughts would be that the ZR is an upgrade to the Xperia Z.

HOWEVER, fear not all Xperia Z owners, your device is not yet ‘old’ or ‘out of date’.

The ZR is actually a slightly smaller device with 4.55”display and a bigger battery.  It also has a slightly different rating of IP55 & IP58 as opposed to the Xperia Z IP55 & 57.

We can however confirm that there are no plans for the ZR to arrive in the UK, so if you think this is the device for you then you need to source elsewhere or opt for the Xperia Z instead.

Sony Xperia L arriving 15th May

We expect the first stock of the Sony Xperia L to arrive on Wednesday 15th May.

  • Scratch resistant glass
  • 8 megapixel camera with Exmor RS sensor

  • 720p HD video recording @30fps
