After developing such a successful partnership, Huawei have once again teamed up with Porsche to produce a sophisticated device that we think you’ll love; the Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design.

This device has been crafted specifically for a high-end market and features all of the best parts of the critically acclaimed Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Now, RS is what Porsche use on their top of the line race cars and stands for Rennsport; or in German, ‘racing’. Porsche produces some of the quickest engines in the world, so does the Huawei Mate 20 RS fit the bill?

    Design/Display

huawei-mate-20-rs-porsche-main.jpgThe biggest difference you’ll notice between the standard Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Mate 20 RS Porsche Design is that the general construction of the handset has been significantly upgraded. A combination of ultra-premium materials including genuine leather and polished glass have been combined and create a really unique finish that’s not like anything currently on the market.

Indeed, the leather that sandwiches a central glass streak has been crafted from sustainably sourced US cowhide leather and feels really good to the touch as well as the making the device significantly more slip resistant.

Because of this, the device is just over 1mm thicker than the Mate 20 Pro however we can’t say we’ve noticed this whilst using the device all that much, if at all. That aside, the general feel of the device is hard to separate from the Mate 20 Pro.

The display is pretty much identical, and we’ve really enjoyed the 6.39-inch FullView QHD+ display of the Mate 20 Pro. This gives a 1440 x 3120-pixel resolution at 538 pixels per inch which allows for bright and vivid colours that is perfect for gaming or watching videos.

The 2.5D curved glass of the display heightens the premium feel and you’ll find the classic Porsche logo to the rear of the Mate 20 RS. The device will be available in the elegant Black finish from Clove.

    • Ultra-premium materials
    • Sustainably sourced US cowhide leather
    • 39-inch FullView QHD+ display
    • 1440 x 3120-pixel resolution
    • 538ppi
    • 5D curved glass
    • Porsche logo etched on rear

    Camera

huawei-mate-20-rs-porsche-rear.jpgArguably the headlining feature of the Mate 20 Pro, the Leica triple lens camera setup will also be found on the rear of the Mate 20 RS Porsche Design.

The camera set up consists of a 40MP f/1.8 aperture main sensor that is perfect for capturing the detail in pictures, a 20MP ultra-wide-angle lens that is vital for those landscape shots, macro shots and big group pictures, as well as an 8MP telephoto lens that is fitted for those distant shots.

If selfies are more your thing, then the front camera measures in at a very impressive 24MP and has a wide-angle lens as well as beauty mode and portrait mode. These can be used to adjust skin smoothness, face width and warmth, resulting in some really impressive images.

Now, thehardware on this device is really impressive, but so is the camera’s software. Huawei’s AI technology works brilliantly and is able to recognise over 1500 scenes and adapt it’s settings accordingly, whether it be colours, brightness or contrast – the results that we’ve had with our Mate 20 Pro have been excellent.

In keeping with the sophistication of Porsche, the lenses of the Mate 20 RS do not protrude from the device as they do on the Mate 20 Pro and are instead fitted directly into that sleek glass back panel. The result is striking and makes the phone both sleek and clean.

    • Leica triple lens rear camera
    • 40MP, f/1.8 main sensor
    • 20MP, ultra-wide-angle lens
    • 8MP telephoto lens
    • 24MP front camera
    • AI technology recognises over 1500 scenes

    Performance

When it comes to performance, the most prominent thing of note is the fact that the storage options of the Mate 20 RS have been upgraded to 256GB of internal memory and 8GB of RAM. This is double the offering of the Mate 20 Pro so you won’t have to worry about having enough room for media, games and apps.

Other than that, the device is powered by the same HiSilicon Kirin 980 octa-core processor that has been outstanding in the Mate 20 Pro – we haven’t experienced any lag or frame rate issues in the time that we’ve had the device. Similarly, the Mate 20 RS runs the same Android 9.0 (Pie) with Huawei EMUI 9,  however comes with a number of themes that match the classic Porsche Design and again, are very sleek and sophisticated.

A 4200mAh battery will keep you powered for a day without any problems at all, whilst the Mate 20 RS comes with all of the much-loved charging features of the Mate 20 Pro. Notably, the device can charge from 0-70% in less than half hour with Huawei’s Supercharge 40W Adapter and is Reverse Wireless Charging enabled. This means that the device can be used to power other Wireless Charging enabled smartphone and accessories.

Alongside this, the Mate 20 RS Porsche Design comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner as well as 3D Facial Recognition, both of which have been quick and efficient on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

    • Upgraded storage: 256GB and 8GB RAM
    • HiSilicon Kirin 980 octa-core processor
    • Android 9.0 (Pie)
    • 4200mAh battery
    • Reverse Wireless Charging
    • In-display fingerprint sensor
    • 3D facial recognition

Clearly, the Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design is easily one of the most sophisticated devices currently on the market.

It simply oozes class to look at, however doesn’t feature a massive amount of internal differences to Huawei’s standard Mate 20 Pro. If money was no object then this would definitely be the device for us, however for some, the differences may just not justify the extra cost. The decision is down to you.

The Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design is available from Clove in Black as a Dual SIM variant with 256GB internal memory and 8GB of RAM for £1920.
