    Huawei Mate 20 X Review

The Huawei Mate 20 X is a device that we’ve been waiting a long time for and we have not been disappointed.

The Mate 20 X has been crafted beautifully with one clear intention in mind; delivering high quality graphics on a stunning large display, with all of the features necessary (and more!) to use it as your day to day smartphone.

The device is available to pre-order now from Clove at £799.99 with first stock expected in January, so head over to our website to check that out.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has given us a little glimpse of what we might expect from this device – so, what are our thoughts?

    Design and Display

Now, of course the first thing you’re bound to notice with the Mate 20 X is the sheer size of the display, measuring in at almost an inch bigger than the Mate 20 Pro.

Indeed, the Full HD OLED display is 7.2-inches and so offers an extensive amount of room to work with. Despite the size, it is possible to easily hold the phone and perform a one-handed operation which Huawei has achieved by minimising the bezels as much as possible so that you can hardly see them at all. The sides and the chin are tiny, whilst a small water drop notch similar to the one found on the Mate 20 minimises the top.

As such, the device has a whopping 87% screen-to-body ratio and a tall 18.7:9 aspect ratio.

With a 2244 x 1080-pixel resolution at 346 pixels per inch, the device provides a fully immersive experience that gamers, photographers and media lovers will absolutely love!

The fingerprint sensor is now to the rear of the device and this can also be used to perform swiping tasks, for example when scrolling through images in your picture gallery. You don’t need to worry about fingerprint smudges though, as the glass on the back of the device has been coated in an anti-fingerprint solution.

Now, what is a film or game without accompanying sound? At both ends of the device, you can find dual symmetrical speakers that offer a super high dynamic range of up to 40 dB so that every sound – no matter how loud – is produced in astounding clarity, richness and depth.

    Camera

If photography is your thing, then you’ll be really pleased to hear that the Mate 20 X has adopted the same triple lens system that’s found on the Mate 20 Pro.

A number of us here at Clove have been using the Mate 20 Pro for around a month now and just cannot fault the device when it comes to taking pictures. Whether it’s been pictures with friends or scenery shots, the pictures that we’ve managed to take have been incredible.

The Leica triple lens is fitted with a main 40MP sensor that is perfect for capturing the details of pictures, a 20MP ultra-wide-lens that is vital for those landscape shots, macro shots and of course the big group pictures, whilst the 8MP telephoto lens is fitted for distant shots.

If selfies are your thing then you’ll love the 24MP selfie shooter with a wide-angle-lens, as well as beauty mode and portrait mode.

What we have found particularly impressive is Huawei’s AI technology which can recognise more than 1500 scenes and automatically adjusts colours, brightness and contrast to suit the light accordingly.

And if all that wasn’t enough, then you can look back on all your stunning images on your large 7.2inch display. It really is a smartphone photographers dream.

    • Leica triple-lens camera
    • 40MP main sensor, 20MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 8MP telephoto lens
    • 24MP front camera
    • AI technology recognises over 1500 scenes

    Performance

As with the rest of Huawei’s Mate 20 range, the Mate 20 X comes with a HiSilicon Kirin 980 octa-core processor. The Kirin 980 has worked fantastically on the Mate 20 Pro and seems to be perfect for serious mobile gamers as we haven’t experienced any early problems with lag or frame rates.

The device is powered by GPU Turbo 2.0 technology in which hardware and software work hand in hand to accelerate speed and power, for faster, smoother and more stable gaming, even in complex and graphically intense games.

Now, if things do start to become intense, the Mate 20 X is fitted with Huawei SuperCool – the world’s first liquid cooling system that conducts heat away from the core to keep the phone cool. We probably haven’t done enough serious gaming on the device to make a judgement on this yet, but we’ve encountered no problems whatsoever so far.

Alongside this, the device comes with an industry leading 5000mAh battery that will keep you covered for hours of entertainment as well as 128GB of internal memory and 6GB of RAM.

    • GPU Turbo 2.0 technology
    • Huawei SuperCool – liquid cooling system
    • 5000mAh battery

So, as you can see, the Huawei Mate 20 X is possibly the ultimate phone for photographers, gamers and media lovers. The display is simply unrivalled and the sound produced by the speakers really is extraordinary for a mobile device.

The Huawei Mate 20 X can now be pre-ordered from Clove for £799.99 with first stock expected early in December. Head to our website to check that one out!
