• Google Pixel 3 Announced: Shipping Early November

Google officially announced their Pixel 3 range smartphones today along with a handful of other new hardware products. The phones have been rumoured and leaked quite a lot over the past few weeks, so there’s not a huge amount here to surprise us.

Still, the Pixel range continues to offer the best of Google Android. Design-wise, the look and feel remain fairly unique. Google manages to create some individuality among a homogenous hardware market thanks to the subtle dual colour shades and matte glass finish

Photography too remains the stand-out feature. Google’s excellent software helping to create dynamic yet natural images that burst with detail in all manner of challenging conditions.

Google Pixel 3 & Pixel 3 XL differences

Just like last year, the core specifications of both the Pixel 3 and the XL model are the same. So we have the same Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB RAM and 64/128GB storage options on both. We also have exactly the same camera arrays.

As Apple finally realised this year, it makes no sense to ‘penalise’ customers who want a smaller phone or try to feature push people towards a larger model. Instead, the only difference between the two versions is the physical size and display.

On to those displays then. The standard Pixel 3 is a 5.5″ AMOLED panel. The larger XL provides a 6.3″ P-OLED panel. Contrast and colour reproduction do differ slightly, although the casual may struggle to see the finer differences. Both are full HD (1080 x 2280) with the now expected stretched display (19:9 ratio).

The standard model keeps a top bezel, whilst the Pixel 3 XL embraces (perhaps grudgingly?) the controversial ‘notch’.

Interestingly, Google has decided to stick with a single lens main camera. At a time when Huawei have had great success with the P20 Pro’s triple lens array, this is quite bold. Previous Pixel phones have relied on Google’s unique blend of hardware and software algorithms to become the critic’s choice for mobile photography. Without a telephoto lens, Google are leaning hard into their software algorithms to produce a zoom effect.
