Sony Xperia XZ2 BannerSony has always been a brand synonymous with high-quality manufacturing and high-end products that develop and embrace new technologies. When it comes to smartphones this is still the case.

Like many major brands, Sony has a whole range of devices pitched at several price points. You won’t find as many different variations as some other manufacturers; some would say that’s a good thing. As long as you have a decent idea of your budget and requirements, there should be a single Sony phone to suit. You don’t have to go picking through half a dozen sub-models!

    Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact SIM Free Clove GreenAre you looking for high-end specification but don’t want to hold a massive handset? Then the XZ2 Compact is just for you.

Except for the size, the Compact is almost exactly the phone as the larger Xperia XZ2. You get a Full HD (1080 x 2160) HDR certified screen, Snapdragon 845 processor and the excellent, power-efficient Snapdragon 845 processor. All the same audio & video enhancements present on the larger phone are here too.

If you want a more pocketable flagship, the XZ2 Compact is one of the only options on the market. And considering the lower price, is a bit of a bargain at the same time.

    Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra

Sony Xperia XA2 UltraSometimes bigger is just better. If you don’t mind one leg getting a better workout while you walk than the other, then the XA2 Ultra offers a huge 6″ display. It’s not just the screen that makes this phone a monster though. There’s also a 3,580 mAh cell packed into the metal casing.

There’s also finesse within this big frame. The 23MP Exmor RS camera was Sony’s flagship-level photography module until the new MotionEye was put on last year’s models. A dual 16+8 MP array is available on the front of the phone too.

    Key Features

    • Android 8 (Oreo) OS

    Sony Xperia XA2

    Sony Xperia XA2

The XA2 is a bit of a workhorse of a phone. Solidly built with an efficient processor, screen and battery combination, this phone sits firmly in the mid-range.

It’s also deceptively good value for money when you consider the excellent 23MP Exmor RS camera, Quick Charge 3 enabled USB Type-C port and Full HD display. Plus it’s my personal phone, so that’s an endorsement.

    Key Features

    • Android 8 (Oreo) OS
    • Rear 23MP Sony Exmor RS camera sensor
    • 8MP front-facing Sony Exmor RS camera

    Sony Xperia L2

Sony Xperia L2Do you like the Sony brand but don’t need to spend a lot of money on a smartphone? Then pick the Xperia L2. Sony’s design language and manufacturing capabilities shine through, even when the core specification is quite basic.

Of course, at just £169 you’re never going to get an incredible specification although Sony keeps themselves honest at this price point. The 5.5″ display is fairly large and very bright, plus the main 16MP camera still features Sony’s own Exmor RS technology, rather than a lower tier lens.

There’s also the new USB-Type C port and Sony’s Qnovo adaptive charging software. This is designed to protect battery quality over the lifespan of the phone – something other handsets at this price point will lack.

    Key Features

    • Android 7.1.1 (Nougat) OS
    • Rear 16MP Sony Exmor RS camera sensor
    • 8MP front-facing Sony Exmor RS camera
    • 5.5″ HD IPS LCD touchscreen
    • Signature Sony industrial design
    • 32 GB storage & micro SD support up to 256GB
    • 1.5GHz MediaTek quad-core processor and 3GB RAM
    • 4G LTE / NFC / Android Pay / FM Radio
    • USB Type-C connectivity
    • Qnovo adaptive charging & Sony Battery Care
