• Nokia 8110 4G – UK & Europe customers beware imported & counterfeit models on auction sites & marketplaces

    By Josh Bethell , July 11, 2018 - Leave a comment

Back when it was announced in February, the Nokia 8110 4G caused a bit of a stir. Following on from the success of the rebooted 3310 and 3310 3G, this most recent retro-revival looks to be the perfect handset for those looking for a basic phone that still has a few modern features.

Unfortunately, the UK and European release date has slipped on more than one occasion. Originally we expected stock in late May. This turned into June, then July, and now we’re facing an August launch.

We don’t know the full reasons behind this, although we suspect Nokia are focussing on emerging markets in other global regions. To date, the 8110 4G has officially been released in Singapore and some other countries.

Imported Nokia 8110 4G models appearing on eBay & other marketplaces

We have though begun to notice models appearing for sale at other UK stores. There are notably many sellers on eBay with the phone. Other marketplaces and independent retailers have the handset listed too. These will all be imported models.

eBay UK is currently awash with Nokia 8110 4G phones. These will all be imported models with no warranty and potentially incorrect frequency bands for the UK & Europe

Whilst there is nothing wrong with people selling imported phones on such marketplaces, we would urge caution if you intend to buy one. Not only will the phone have no official UK warranty, it may also have the wrong frequency bands.

Unlike more expensive flagship smartphones, cheaper devices & feature phones are often released with regionalised, rather than global, frequency support. If you do buy an imported 8110 4G, you could find that one of the most important features – the 4G mentioned in the name – doesn’t work properly. You should still get basic voice & text, however, mobile data could well be an issue.

    Counterfeit Versions

Whilst it is legal to sell the imported models mentioned above, what is definitely not OK are fakes. We must stress that Clove has not encountered any counterfeit models, however, some of our customers have told us of their experiences.

In particular, one customer purchased a phone listed as “Nokia 8110 4G”. from an eBay seller. What arrived a few days later looked on the surface to be a legitimate phone. The box had Nokia branding and the product looked like all the pictures and videos online. Sadly, when he turned it on, the device booted into an unknown Chinese operating system and the screen was a very low resolution. He has since raised this with eBay & PayPal, although is finding it difficult to ‘prove’ the product is counterfeit.

We are of the opinion that he would have a legal case against the seller for fraud and that eBay should be doing more to clamp down on such behaviour on its platform, however considering the relatively low value of each individual transaction, such policing of the system is difficult.

If you are wondering how such good-looking fakes can be produced, then the answer lies in the factories. HMD Global manufacture the original Nokia -branded phones in Chinese factories. It is very likely that some unscrupulous people have been able to obtain the reference design for the 8110 chassis and manufactured a cheap copy with the same body but completely different internals. They may also have access to the files and machinery used to print Nokia’s official retail packaging.

    Official European models now available

Shortly after writing this blog, the European Dual SIM 8110 was made available. Clove has now obtained some of this stock and are shipping orders. The official UK version of the phone is still due to be released in August.

The so-called Banana Phone is due to be released in the UK next month. We don’t have an exact date but will add this to our site as soon as we know more.

  • So the Nokia 8110’s that you are selling on your website will have 4G support in the UK?

    I can see this:

“When you order a Nokia 8110 4G from Clove Technology, you will receive an official UK/EU specification SIM Free handset.

All our phones are factory unlocked and ready for use with UK, EU & most global SIM cards.

The phones have support for global GSM networks; for 3G/HSPA & 4G/LTE support outside of Europe, please check the specifications.”

Please can you clarify whether it will support 4G here. Thanks!

    • Hello Kevin

Yes it will support 4G in the UK. Even if not politically following next year, the UK will remain part of Europe geographically and for cellular networks.
