After a long four years, the 2018 World Cup has finally kicked off in Russia. We could spend hours comparing squads and statistics to make our winning predictions. Instead, we decided to compare each of the top sides to some of our favourite smartphones, all available from Clove Technology.

    Germany

oneplus-6Current World Cup holders, the Germans are once more one of the hot favourites to claim top prize.

From back to front, the German national side are one of the most solid international teams on the planet, and much like the OnePlus 6, focus on improving core necessities rather than providing unnecessary frills or show.

OnePlus’ custom Oxygen OS has been crafted and refined to ensure speedy software that creates a smooth, slick experience. So too, the German side are quick, strong and athletic, crafted to do the job that they need to do, and to do it very well.

    Brazil

iphonexIt’s hard to think of the World Cup without picturing the yellow and green of Brazil. Now think of the smartphone market and try not to picture an iPhone in there somewhere. Hard, isn’t it?

Much like the iPhone X, the Brazilian national side compete at the very top year after year after year. In many respects, both are the cream of the crop in their respective fields, but both do it with style and flair.

Do we need incessant flicks and step-overs? Can we cope without Face ID? Probably. But is it thoroughly enjoyable? Oh absolutely.

    France

Coming into Russia with one of the strongest all-round squads are undoubtedly the French. From Lloris to Griezmann, Mbappe to Kante and Varane to Pogba, it’s tough to find a weak point.

In a similar vein, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is one of the most complete smartphones currently on the market. Fantastic camera, dazzling Infinity Display, Bixby Assistant with Live Translation. There’s nothing else you could need.

Both device and team are very, very solid solutions, however feature just enough flair to keep you wanting more.

    Argentina

The Argentines are all about firepower. Boasting some of the most talented attacking players in world football, Argentina have a real shot at making it all the way.

All eyes will be on the triple threat of Messi, Aguero and Dybala; the best in the world. The Huawei P20 Pro has a triple threat of its own, boasting an industry-leading Leica triple lens camera.

The two have much in common. Whilst these points may be the focus of both, there is however, so much more to consider. For example, the Huawei Kirin 970 octa-core processor is one of the best in the industry, whilst it is difficult to find a single weak player in the full Argentinian World Cup squad.

    England

As an England fan (that has thus experienced years and years of grief) it is difficult not to be pessimistic. However, after several years of not really competing, this young England side look ready to make a serious comeback, much like the latest Honor 10 smartphone.

With one of the youngest squads in the tournament, England finally offer pace (think Sterling, Rashford, Vardy…). So too, the Honor 10 features an impressive Huawei Kirin 970 chipset that works with enough to speed to seriously compete.

Both phone and squad feature enough of everything and enough to make them serious contenders. But do both finally have what is needed to compete with the very best?
