Continuing a host of flagship announcements at MWC, Sony has announced their newest devices. The Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact carry on a tradition of feature-stuffed Xperia smartphones.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 will cost £699 (£582.50 ex-VAT) and the XZ2 Compact £599 (£499.17 ex-VAT). Both are due into stock the first week of April. The full-size XZ2 will be available in Liquid Black, Liquid Silver and Deep Green. Its Compact brother has 4 colour options: Black, White Silver, Moss Green and Coral Pink.

Clove are currently finalising a launch deal with Sony for some free accessories to be sent with early orders. Any orders placed now will be eligible for this offer once it is advertised.

The XZ2 range is the 3rd flagship release in about 18 months, with the XZ Premium dropped in the middle too.

Each release has seen an iterative update to the base hardware and that is no different with the XZ2 models. These phones feature the latest Qualcomm 845 silicon, as well as a host of magic Sony screen and audio processing technology.

One thing the Sony Xperia line has been crying out for though is a redesign. Personally, I’ve always liked the blocky, rectangular approached Xperia smartphones have favoured. However, this design language hasn’t sat well with many reviewers in the wake of slimmer, bezel-free devices launched throughout 2017.

To make up for this, the Sony Xperia XZ2 follows the trend of an 18:9 (2:1) screen ratio and rounded edges for a more seamless and ergonomic flow. The back curves outward out and looks like a cross between mid-range HTC and Moto devices. Sony says this should fit the hand better than the flatter competition. How they’ll rest on a table remains to be seen.

The fingerprint sensor also moves to the back of the phone. It’s a shame to see the integrated fingerprint/power button on the side go, but apparently, Sony was never able to make this work in North America due to patent issues. In the interest of making a global device, they’ve settled for the new positioning on the back.

Also on the back is the MotionEye camera first seen on the XZ Premium. Samsung may be shouting about super slow-motion but let’s not forget Sony did it first: almost a whole year ago.
