Officially announced on Sunday at MWC, the cloak has finally been taken off the new Samsung Galaxy S9 range. Thanks to a lot of leaks over the past few weeks we already had a fairly good idea of what to expect.

An improved camera with super slow motion has been confirmed. Sony pulled this trick last year although Samsung’s implementation looks to be much slicker with better options for sharing the content. A “dual-aperture” feature is also present. The main camera can switch between F/1.5 or F/2.4 depending on ambient light. With this Samsung are looking to offer the best low-light performance in mobile photography. New AR magic such as Live Translation (powered by Bixby) is also available.

And that’s no bad thing; the S8 models are among the most beautifully designed phones built to date. The S9 models are only marginally wider and shorter than last year’s outings, with all the same button and port placement. At just a glance you’d be hard pushed to tell the black S8 and S9 apart.

The Infinity Display remains the same dimensions and resolution. Samsung has said though that the S9 iteration is brighter than before. On the back of the phone, the fingerprint sensor has dropped below the camera lens(es). Most would agree that this a much more natural placement.

Samsung continues to differentiate the ‘standard’ and Plus not just in screen size but also in the camera department. Just as in 2017, the S9 Plus will feature a dual-camera array with the smaller model having just the single shooter.

Primarily the second sensor and lens are for additional effects and post-editing features, so the side-by-side results of unedited snapshots shouldn’t differ too much. If you do opt for the standard S9, you still get all the big new features being advertised such as the super slow motion.

Elsewhere Samsung has tacked on an animated ‘AR’ emoji feature. This scans your face to create an avatar that can mimic human expressions. It looks to be a hastily designed response to Apple’s Animoji (no-one really asked for that either) which end up looking like a more detailed (and definitely creepier) version of Nintendo’s Mii avatars. It’s a cute proof of concept but the likelihood of people using their doe-eyed AR Emoji to communicate over traditional smileys for more than a couple of days is probably quite low.

    First stock due March 8th

So all in all the S9 range is exactly what we expected in specifications. Rumours also suggested the prices would rise slightly over last year and these weren’t wrong.

The standard S9 is available now for £739 (£615.83 ex-VAT). You can get your hands on a Plus model for £869 (£724.17 ex-VAT).

Both versions of the phone will be available in Midnight Black, Lilac Purple & Coral Blue. At this time the Titanium Grey has not been announced for the UK.
