• Which smartphones have a fingerprint sensor?

    By Josh , April 8, 2017 - Leave a comment

Touch ID Fingerprint SensorA few years ago a fingerprint sensor was only available on the most expensive devices. Now they are found on phones even at the more affordable end of the industry.

The most common use for a fingerprint sensor is to secure the home screen. Many phones let you store up to 5 individual fingerprints. You can then use any of these to gain access to the phone when it’s locked.

Beyond this, there a re a few other uses. The fingerprint can access secure folders in the phone storage. You may also have it as a fail-safe for authorising online purchases. Combined with NFC technology, a fingerprint can also authorise contactless payments through Apple or Android Pay.

Less common but available with an advanced fingerprint sensor is their use as a navigation aid. Some sensors can be calibrated so that taps and swipes across their surface have unique actions.

Perhaps you want to mimic the Android navigation (back, home and recent apps). Maybe a double tap with an authorised fingerprint launches a specific application. This list doesn’t go into this much detail; if you do choose a phone with a fingerprint sensor, check the manufacturer specifications thoroughly to see if there are added features.

    Smartphones with a fingerprint sensor

Below is a list of major smartphone manufacturers and their fingerprint sensor enabled phones.

This list is by no means exhaustive. Many of these manufacturers have other devices which are not available in the UK / Europe which we may have omitted. Also, some of the phones below may no longer be available to purchase new. There are likely to be many more handsets released throughout 2017 and we will keep this list updated. Last updated 08/08/17.

Josh joined Clove part time a few years ago whilst studying Computing at Bournemouth University. Since finishing his studies he has remained at Clove in a full time position, involved in sales, returns and social media. Involved with both consumer electronics and software since the mid 2000s, keeping up to date with industry developments is as much a hobby as it is a job. Easy going but never afraid to share an opinion, Josh can often be found in his spare time listening to some heavy rock or at a local gig as well as playing with the latest gadgets and video games.

  • You need to distinguish between swipe sensors (which are a pain and regularly don’t recognise me, as well as reacting quite slowly) and touch sensors (which are faster and very rarely get it wrong).
