We’re often enamoured by the latest and greatest smartphones. The handsets that push the boundaries of consumer technology with cameras, screens and processors bursting with power. It’s sometimes easy to forget just how expensive these can be.

For many of us, such power is desirable, but generally not a necessity. As the smartphone market has matured and advancements plateaued, the mid-range has delivered more exciting and affordable products that tick pretty much every box the average user requires.

The Galaxy A series does just that. Now updated for 2017, these are highly suited to a wide range of people.

Samsung themselves would like to pitch them at businesses. It’s easy to see why. They look almost as sleek as the more expensive Galaxy S range, plus retain a full complement of modern features. You get the fingerprint sensor, high quality camera, USB Type-C and top-tier security.

    Samsung Knox security

Both the Galaxy A3 and A5 have Samsung Knox installed. Over the past few years, Knox has become a respected security solution for Samsung Android handsets.

The system is purely optional and can either be activated during device set up or at any other time.

With Knox you get a password-protected workspace and locked down apps. Just by pressing a button, you can switch to the Knox space, as if you have two phones in one. This is perfect for separating work and personal information on one device.

Knox is also compatible with existing MDM & VPN solutions as well as Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. This lets IT service create a tailored solution for individuals, or create policies for tiered workers.

KNOX EMM is also available as a cloud-based management package from Samsung. This reduces additional costs on infrastructure and training for companies that do not have experience in providing managed handsets.

Within the Knox space, secure versions of standard apps are available including Contacts, Calendar, Phone, Browser, Camera and Email. All data in the Knox space is encrypted so even if your phone is lost or stolen, it cannot be accessed.

Finally, Knox-enabled handsets have additional security features to protect from hardware and boot-level attacks and hacks.
