Do you travel regularly? Are you an outgoing adventurer or explorer, taking frequent holidays or expeditions? Perhaps you are part of a government agency or NGO that finds themselves in far-flung locales every other week.
If the above sounds like you or someone you know, then you may be interested in a Thuraya SatSleeve receiver for smartphones.
Thuraya operate their own satellite network, with coverage to over two-thirds of the Earth’s surface including the Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions.
They operate a global partnership with hundreds of cellular operators globally and have secured contracts with several high-profile international organisations and agencies.
The SatSleeve range are Thuraya’s first products aimed at the individual, rather than specifically at organisations, however there’s no reason why they can’t be implemented in a group deployment.
Both the SatSleeve+ and SatSleeve Hotspot utilise the same technology, with the SatSleeve+ using a clip to hold the smartphone in place and the Hotspot version designed to to be sat on a desk or put in a bag.
The Thuraya SatSleeve app, available for Android and iPhone allows your smartphone to connect to the SatSleeve receiver. You can then make a call as normal on your smartphone and it will be routed through the satellite connection, perfect when you find yourself in an area with limited or no cellular signal.
Each SatSleeve product comes with a $10 preloaded SIM card. Calls through the Thuraya satellite network are charged depending on usage and/or recipient service:
Thuraya also offer GSM roaming with their huge global partnership base, allowing you to use your SatSleeve and possibly achieve a better roaming tariff than if you used your standard provider
