    • Integrated fingerprint sensor power button for intuitive unlock

Berlin, IFA, 2nd September 2015 Sony Mobile Communications (“Sony Mobile”) today unveiled its next-generation Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, and the world’s first 4K smartphone Xperia Z5 Premium – each engineered to make everyday experiences better.

“Smartphones are part of people’s lives” said Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO at Sony Mobile Communications. ”Since users already create, share and enjoy most of their content on the go – we’ve set out to bring Sony’s latest innovations in camera, design and display to ensure the Xperia Z5 series is the best possible lifestyle and entertainment platform.”

A mobile camera experience unlike any other

Xperia Z5 features Sony’s brand new large 1/2.3 Exmor RSTM for mobile 23MP sensor and F2.0 G Lens – it’s Sony’s first completely re-imagined smartphone camera module since Xperia Z1, designed with Sony’s interchangeable lens camera αTM technology for clear,  vivid imagery every time.

The camera is capable of the fastest autofocus in a smartphone, a powerful blend of speed and accuracy to capture split-second moments with ease. It delivers a ground-breaking speed of just 0.037 seconds – faster than the blink of a human eye (average 0.1 – 0.4 s), so whether you’re jumping for the frisbee in the park, diving into the pool or catching air on the vert ramp, you’ll have the power to preserve spontaneous action in real-time.

A combination of the large 23MP Exmor RSTM for mobile sensor and advanced processing software lets you get close to subjects; whether it be a landmark, architecture or other objects of interest, with 5x clear image zoom with minimum loss of quality. And, advancements in low-light photography mean you can capture clearer photos at night or in darker surroundings with less noise and blur – perfect for capturing a sunrise or night skyline.

With the continued popularity of content capture for social media, Xperia Z5 series brings significant advancements in the evolution of Sony’s SteadyShotTM with Intelligent Active Mode for video. Further improvements mean you’ll be able to continuously capture action smoothly, such as riding a bike or skateboard, free from jolts or shudders. It also features better low-light performance without blur.

Xperia Z5 Premium will upscale your favourite content to 4K, enhancing any native or third party videos or photos so you can view Netflix, YouTube or your holiday shots in rich, vibrant 4K detail. And, Xperia Z5 Premium is built to allow you to get creative by capturing in 4K and immediately enjoying the content on Z5 Premium, with the option of preserving any moment as an 8MP quality image.

And, why not port the memory card from Sony’s 4K Action Cam FDR-X1000V to Xperia Z5 Premium to enjoy your footage immediately – or simply connect to the big screen either wirelessly via DLNA or with MHL 3.0 to enjoy your content on a 4K TV.

    • Hi Paul, yes nothing’s been announced on this. The Ultra form factor was a bit of a bomb for Sony unfortunately – excellent phone but not particularly good sales.
If we see it again I expect it will be with mid-range specifications to absorb some of that risk

  • It’s a shame it uses the massively flawed Snapdragon 810. It would be a great phone otherwise. Using the 810 seems like a crazy move if you want to sell anything. It’s been proven to overheat unless heavily underclocked on various occasions. The performance out of it for five minutes at a time is fine, but any longer and your experience will be adversely affected.

    • Hi Steve, it is an interesting decision. The Z3+ did have some initial heating issues which were addressed through software updates. The crux of these updates may have been to restrict the processor although without access to the source code we’ll never know.
We can only assume that Sony have now had enough time with the 810 to develop firmware that gets the best of both worlds and warrants its inclusion across the whole new range.

    • Hi K, thanks for coming through. Very good – in fact we’re finalising some details with Sony Mobile UK now.
Of course any early pre-orders will be eligible and upgraded to whatever deal we do get to put together

  • Hello,Josh Bethell ,iam from india and i want to purchase xperia z5 compact, now only waiting for ur stock availability.iam also from a technical field and a big fan of xperia compact mobiles.i check all specification of xperia z5 compact and its match with all indian networks, also talk to ur customercare number

    • Hello Parminder, thanks for the kind words and interest in the Z5 Compact.
The phone will definitely work on the Indian networks – it is a ‘global’ version. The price may change before release date. If it does you will only have to pay the lower price.

  • Hi,
You have now announced pre-order offers for the Z5 & Z5 compact, but not the Z5 Premium. I have placed my preorder with you but am curious if there is an offer in the pipework for the Premium model as I had hoped it would have been announced around the same time. Thanks

    • Hi James, we are working on something for the Premium now. With the release date being a month after, there’s still some negotiations to be done!

  • Hi Josh. What is the release date for Z5 Premium in the UK? Also can you confirm Oct 8th is the release date in the UK for Z5 and Z5 Compact? Hope to hear from you soon.

    • Hi John, there’s no exact date on the Premium, although we’ve been told to expect it in early November, so there’s still just over a month to go.
We have the ‘1st week of October’ from Sony on the Z5 & Z5 Compact. I think the official high street date might be the 8th, although we can often get these out a day or so ahead of schedule with Sony’s blessing if the stock is in.

        • Hi John, yes we saw this this morning not long after my comment and management have asked Sony Mobile for an explanation.
What’s interesting is Carphone’s price is £20 above Sony’s own RRP and 02 are £50 higher. GiffGaff are inline but none of them include the free headphones they’ve promised us. There seems to a split of availability on the colours too.
It looks like the high street / contract providers may have negotiated a separate deal we weren’t aware of

    • We’ve had some dates in from distribution this morning. Compacts are likely Tuesday 6th, although if they land late might not ship until Wed 7th.

  • Buenas tarde me gustaria saber si el celuar estara disponible en Puerto Rico y paraque fecha y aue compañia lo traera

    • Hello Angel I am not certain if the phone will be officially released in Puerto Rico.
We can ship internationally however, so can send this to you from the UK if you order on our website

  • Looks fine and I’m really on the edge of pressing submit 😉

Quick question – Do they come with headphones? If so, which type (and do they have stop, FF, REV buttons)

    • Hi Chris

We’ve had our first stock of the Compacts ion today and there are no headphones included in the box.
You get a UCH 20 rapid charger, USB cable & screen protectors

  • Hi Josh.

Why is the Z5 Premium only available in black? Do you not have any other colours on offer? Also will there be a special deal incl. with the Premium? Will there be anything free attached to the purchase?

    • Hi John
We did have the Chrome and white listed right when the Premium was announced.
Unfortunately Sony UK told us that stock would be very limited and only black would be readily available to all retailers in the UK.
We have been promised enough for our earliest orders but no more

  • Hi Josh.

I don’t know if u know this but I had a look at the Amazon UK page for Z5 Premium and on the webpage it says ‘This item is due to be released on December 1, 2015’.

Do you know anything about this and why they would list that date? Clove have said it’s coming early Nov so is that still the case? Dec sounds far too late and I don’t think I could wait that long to be honest.

    • Hi John
I can’t be sure why Amazon would list that date however November is still our expected date from Sony.
To be fair we’ve beaten Amazon to stock of phones in the UK before, they might sell everything but they’re not always first 😉
