A look at Vuzix Smart Glasses

Just as smartphones forever changed the telephone, the Vuzix smart glasses M100 could be a defining moment in our digital interface..

What are they?

Vuzix smart glasses M100 are the world’s first enhanced “Hands Free” smartphone display and communications system for on-the-go data access from your Smartphone and the Internet. Compatible under the Android operating system; text, video, email, mapping, audio and all we have come to expect from smartphones is available through this wireless personal information display system. Vuzix smart glasses offer a wearable visual connection to the Cloud, through your smartphone or other compatible smart device, wherever you go.

The Vuzix smart glasses have an integrated head tracker and GPS to enable spatial and positional awareness. The gadget also features an integrated camera for video and still image capturing. With these connected to a smartphone perhaps first-person augmented reality is now finally available!

Imagine, you’re out shopping and spot an interesting item on the shelf. A quick snapshot of the barcode and your smart glasses enhanced app goes off to the Cloud, finds the product and competitive product and displays the data. If a more attractive offer is available elsewhere, you can instantly place your order, then and there.

What do they do?

Hands free- The glasses are modelled on conventional in-ear hands free systems, however the model expands the design to include a camera and a display on the arm. Wireless Bluetooth and Wi-FI allow for a mobile connection to the cloud. Voice gesture commands are available on the smart glasses to enhance the hands free usage.

Video Display- The arm in-front of the eye holds a 16:9 WQVGA full colour display and provides the user with access to your smartphone display, basic web content and other data fed to the glasses from your smartphone. Vuzix say the display is designed for both indoor and outdoor usage.

Video Capture- With a 720p HD camera the smart glasses are able to capture good quality video and still images. Video captures will be stored on the internal micro CF slot which can store up to 8GB of memory.

Spatially Aware- Integrated GPS and head tracking capabilities can determine your current direction of view and movement. It is said by Vuzix that with the right app combined with the on-board camera the glasses can determine where and what you are looking at enabling seamless actions relevant to your environment and objects in your proximity.

Applications- The Vuzix glasses M100 contain a dedicated processor which runs an Android operating system. Android applications can be downloaded directly into the smart glasses. Both android and IOS (i.e. iphone and ipad) applications can be wirelessly linked to the smart glasses via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. By connecting to and using smartphone applications you can run text, video, email, mapping, audio and other applications we have come to enjoy on smartphones.VuzixM100-product-showcase
