Worrying! It does sound like a compulsion. Personally, I like to use mine as a tool which is great for comms, but you are right… family do resent such interruptions especially when they are not always so fascinated as I am with technology.
As in everything else, we need to keep a sense of perspective. I have two on all day, the BB just for checking what emails have arrived on the server, but I do leave them off (charging) overnight.
