What swayed you?

This is more of a question than an article, but it is one worth thinking about. What made you choose a particular smartphone?

What made you buy the handset that you use?

Was it the brand, the company behind it, the operating system, the specs or a mixture of all of them. Ask yourself why you bought the phone you did and then consider the alternatives. Did you make a mistake or are you happy with the phone you bought?

Come on, tell us what you bought, why you bought it and how happy you have been with your choice because we are genuinely interested.

I will start you off- I own an iPhone 4S and a Google Nexus and I am more happy with the Nexus than the 4S for its large screen, battery life and general performance. The 4S is wonderful to use, but needs a hardware update and maybe we will see one coming soon.

  1. I’ve got an HTC One X. First smartphone was an HTC Hero, then went to the Galaxy Tab – which was not upgraded to Gingerbread like it should have been. I decided the HTC instead of the GS3 because of my poor experience of Samsung and updates (Keis!), although the GS3 I am sure is a great phone.

  2. I’ve got a Galaxy Nexus at the moment, but my previously-owned list is long and distinguished. In reverse order from most recent:

    - Google Nexus S
    - Samsung Galaxy S
    - HTC Desire
    - HTC Hero
    - Various Nokia phones

I also currently own a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (first generation) but will be selling it as soon as my Nexus 7 arrives.

As you can see, I love the Nexus line of devices. Nothing quite compares to the pure Android experience for both performance and user-friendliness. Manufacturer skins get under mine very quickly (especially since my HTC days… early versions of Sense were truly horrible), almost always have a negative performance impact, and frankly aren’t as intuitive as ‘vanilla’ Android.

My first Android phone was the HTC Hero after having used a variety of Nokia and HTC phones previously. I then upgraded to the Google Nexus which I replaced in Autumn 2011 with a Samsung Galaxy Note.

I chose the Galaxy Note for the following reasons
    1. Large High resolution screen but still pocketable.
    2. Replaceable Battery
    3. Micro SD card slot that takes a 64GB card.
    4. Performance.

Since getting the Note, I have had access to newer phones and there is nothing to match it apart from the Samsung S3. I was tempted by the S3 but did not want a smaller screen as I had got used to the size/format of the Note. With the news that Samsung will be announcing the Galaxy Note 2 in August, I suspect that it will combine the best of my original Note and the S3 with Jelly Bean and boosted performance.

    I will be very tempted…….!

I got the S3. The One-X was tempting except for the lack of a microSD slot. HTC must be kicking themselves; they massively underestimated potential customers’ desire for this feature.

The replaceable battery in the S3 is also a plus; I don’t do many long trips but it’s still a nice-to-have.

I found the Note to be too big, whereas the S3 doesn’t seem big at all to me. As I get more used to the S3 perhaps the Note won’t seem quite so large, although I doubt my pockets will get any larger.

There’s also the fact that Samsung made the best phone of the previous two generations; the S3 has an excellent pedigree.
