Phone speculation, football speculation; It’s all the same to me! [EDITORIAL]

A rather different perspective today but none the less I wish to share with you.

So I was scouring the web earlier in search of potential information on some of the new up and coming smartphones due to be released towards the latter part of this year. As I half heartedly scrolled down page 3 of my Google search looking for nothing too specific I found myself drawn to a forum that looked of relevance. As I read through the comments I began to chuckle to myself, as everyone was claiming to have inside information on the latest handsets specifications, UK release dates and so on.

Buzz words like “according to my sources” and “it has been reported” were used frequently throughout. When in reality nobody has reported anything and the only sources these so called ITK (In The Know) technology moles have are the condiments that sit on their dinner tables! My point is that people are so easily influenced by speculation, myself included.

As I watched people argue over unconfirmed reports of a mystery device coming to the UK I began to sympathise and feel their frustration. As an agonised Arsenal fan and general football nut I have found myself dictated by what I read in the papers and what’s reported in the media. For many years have I spent transfer deadline days refreshing my twitter feed for updates on transfers, but from whom? With 90% of reported transfers being pure speculation I don’t know why I hold my breath. It’s all a big game of Chinese whispers and it only takes one wizard with apparent ‘inside knowledge’ to post on one of these forums before a story snowballs out of control.

So this in mind I have vowed not to believe what I read until the likes of Sony, Samsung or HTC have announced the news officially, or Arsenal have announced that so and so has signed a 5 year contract with the club. Speculation on new technology releases, just like football transfer sagas, are not good for the health and I now require solid information in its purist form until I rub my hands at the prospect of the latest deca core device arriving in the UK or a footballing wonder kid that’s set to sign for the Arsenal.
