Would 24 hour POV recording be a step too far?
Google’s Project Glass was showcased at Google I/O earlier this week and made available for US-based attendees to pre-order for delivery in early 2012. It is reported that Google expects the glasses to be available to consumers in 2014.
In terms of hardware capabilities, this means that we are not that far off being able to record our entire day, or at least large parts of it. Granted, we won’t all be recording our days the minute that Google Glasses are available, but it is certainly a realistic possibility within the next decade, in a technological sense.
Would this be for the best? It would certainly help some – Alzheimer’s sufferers for example. Or is it a step closer to the frightening situation painted in Charlie Brooker’s dark satire, Black Mirror:The Entire History of You (trailer here).
My question is – if someone gave you the chance tomorrow to record your day from start to finish, would you do it?
More than once I’ve thought “did he really say that?” or “what happened there?” and stupidly started to look for Sky+ remote to rewind reality, so I can see the appeal. However, I can’t imagine anyone being enthusiastic about talking to a person with a recording device around their neck, so I’d expect this to be even more socially suicidal than bluetooth earpieces… not that I ever saw why they’re so scorned, though.
I’m with you on the Sky+ remote, especially if I ever watch a game of football live. Ha ha yea that’s true. Although after a while they may not be more distinguishable than a pair of ordinary glasses…
I guess I could record my whole day and then spend the next day watching what happened yesterday. The problem is that the next day I would have to watch myself watching myself watch what happened 2 days ago and so on…
I already do this to an extent. Thanks to two separate incidents happening within a week of each other I decided to buy an HD action camcorder for my cycle.
I’ve been recording my rides to and from work for around 18 months; unfortunately (fortunately?) no-one’s done anything stupid enough to warrant me taking the footage to the cops.
Initially I was keeping all of the videos on my NAS, but in the end they were taking up too much space so I switched to wiping the microSD card at the end of each week.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to record everything in case you need to refer to it. You’d need the system to transcribe anything that’s said in order to make it searchable, but Google’s all over that. They’re even going to be able to identify what you’re looking at so you can search by that too.
FInally men will be able to compete against women’s uncanny ability to dredge up something said three years ago! We’ll be Cyberwomen!
Excellent opportunities for perving too. It’s perving that’s driven the adoption of almost every new form of media or media delivery system (magazines, video, internet etc.) so it’s an important consideration.
I think this backs up the point you make nicely

I’m a true visionary ;o)
Ha ha great comments. It was pretty much a 50/50 split between the two.
I’ve been recording the footage from my house cameras for years. They are on a rotating basis so I’ve only been keeping the past few days at a time, but it’s been invaluable. If I could do the same for my personal life I’d do it all the time.
