To clear up any confusion that may exist, the JCB Pro-Smart does have GPS on board despite the spec sheet and some reviews making no mention of this.
We can confirm that we have tested the device with Google Maps having switched on the GPS and it acquired our position.
It’s not necessarily the case here, but an Android phone without GPS on (or installed) will pick up its rough location from what WiFi hotspots it can see. A more definitive test would be installing something like GPS Test or GPS Status, which gives you a nice display of how many satellites it’s picking up, rough accuracy, and on supported devices DOP, which is a more industry standard measure of accuracy.
No to mention the locations of cellular antennas, which can be use in absence of GPS.
Yea some good points there, thanks guys. I’ve recently started using an app called Llama which sets a profile and triggers certain actions based on which cells you are within range of. This apparently uses less battery than the GPS way.
