Improve Sony Xperia S Battery Performance

The more powerful a smartphone the more power it needs.  Whilst Sony have optimised battery usage as best as possible, it is sometimes down to the user to make changes to ensure you get the best battery life possible from your device, especially if you are away from power for a period of time. Here are some suggestions of what you could do.

  • imageWhen you are not using the internet, you can save power by disabling all data connections over mobile networks.
  • Turn off GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when you don’t need these features.
  • Set your synchronisation applications to synchronise manually.
  • Check the battery usage menu in the phone to see which applications use the most power.
  • Close and exit applications that you are not using.
  • Lower the screen display brightness level.
  • Turn off your phone or use Airplane mode if you are in an area with no network coverage.
  • Use a Sony original handsfree device to listen to the music.
  • Keep your phone in standby whenever possible.
  • Live wallpaper is set as default background, so you can change it to static background, which can help to save battery

To make life easier you could use a SmartTag to automate the process for you.

  1. I’m so very disappointed with the Xperia S. I did everything you listed and STILL the battery drains in less than an hour even if I’m not using it!!!

The idea of the Quick Charges stupid, I don’t care how much it takes to charge! I only care HOW MUCH IT LASTS!

I’d like to email Sony but idk how!
I just wanna tell them: ‘You improved the phone, why not improve the battery as well?”
The Battery & Charger’s logo is Sony Ericsson, so obviously they did not change them!!

    I’d buy a better battery for 100$!!!
or at least a Sony update if possible? the IOS update improved the battery life!!

If it stays like this, I might sell it this week!!!! IT’S USELESS!!!!!!!!

  2. Battery seems to improve SIGNIFICANTLY after the .73 update from Sony.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1536332&page=42

Went from 35% battery use in 12 hours of IDLE to Network Mode -> “WCDMA prefered / GSM”)
    to
(Mobile Network Settings > Network Mode -> “WCDMA only”)
(works for firmware versions before .73)

  3. what is the ver 73

  4. my xperia s was at 94% before i sleep, and it’s has all wifi and date OFF and network mode only GSM only. i slept for 5 hours , wake up and my phone’s Battery left 74%. and i got only 1 unread SMS. i wonder what’s wrong with that?

  5. How can i update firmware versions .73

    • Chris Ward says:

      Hi Afsal,

If there are any updates available, they will show when you go to setting > about phone > check for updates

  6. Omg! The battery drains like hell!! Why is there no firmware update in india?

  7. Im on version 75 doesn’t make any difference on battery life, the battery drain is a huge setback on this device as i do like the phone itself a lot!

  8. Recently I have purchased Sony Xperia Neo V Blue. This is my first smart phone and I am very much disappointed because of very very very very very poor battery life and also there is problem of phone getting hot even after continuous 3-4 phone calls. Is there any solution for both the problems, or other wise I have decided to sell it in couple of weeks.

    • Chris Ward says:

You could perhaps optimise the battery performance by optimising settings – turning wifi, gps, brightness off when not needed and installing an app such as Juice Defender. Not sure about the phone overheating, there’s not really an app that can solve that. May be a hardware issue.

  9. hi there is on ebay for sale an GOLD 2430MAH HIGH CAPACITY REPLACEMENT BATTERY FOR SONY XPERIA S ARC HD LT26i
