ASUS Transformer Prime–Update

1/02/2012 UPDATE: TRANSFORMER PRIME TAKEN OFF SALE – READ MORE HERE

The following is an update to the situation with the ASUS Transformer Prim 32GB models (Grey & Champagne Gold).

As you are no doubt aware there have been delays in receipt of this stock and we were expecting a shipment to arrive at the end of the month.  This shipment has subsequently been delayed in arriving to us due to delays in production.

Whilst we do not have a specific revised delivery date, stock is now not expected until late February, early March.

We know that this is not the information that you wish to hear, nor is it the information we wish to deliver, but it is the reality of the situation.

It is possible that some stock will arrive into the UK between now and late February, but in very small numbers and with a large number of retailers requiring the stock it will not ease the situation for any retailer.

We are aware that those who have obtained this tablet already are complaining of faults on the Prime and the fixes rolled out not actually fixing the problem in all instances.  We wish to advise that whatever happens we will be working to ensure we supply only fully working units.

We will update you when we have more information.

Thanks for the info. I have now sourced a Prime from John Lewis. Very pleased with it, although the GPS is very slow to lock, the Wifi performs well in the house. Plus added bonus of 2 years warranty.

    Thanks again.

    Nice one Martyn.
Can you tell me ~ what is your Wifi like when you move away from your router or have Bluetooth switched on and transmitting data?

The best way to ascertain the efficiency of your Wifi is to first install the Android App Speedtest.net (available from here – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.zwanoo.android.speedtest&feature=search_result.)
Next, with the App ready stand as close as you can to your router and do a speed test using the App then note down both speeds of Download & Upload.
Now move away from your router to the furthest point where you would normally have a Wifi signal and do the test again and compare the four speeds.
Next task we need to do is compare these different speeds with another mobile wireless device as in say your phone.
If you can now install speedtest.net on your phone and do the same tests again, this will give you a margin to work from.
If the Prime is as good as you say it is the percentage drop should be liken with the other device.

Finally, if you have the time, carry out the same tests on the Prime only this time turn on Bluetooth on both your phone and on the Prime then get the Prime to send and receive data. Now whilst the Prime is doing the data transfer carry out the speed tests one final time.
Again if the Prime is working fine you should not notice any differences in speed from the tests carried out previously.

There are other items you should be looking out for to see if there are any issues with the Prime but I am sure you are well aware of what has been posted on the forums.

    Mike

  4. I’ve decided to wait for the next model, the TF700, that has a better screen and modified body (plastic instead of metal at the top).

    • Bugblatter says:

I was tempted too, but there’ll be use cases where the screen’s better and use cases when it won’t be, at least for a while.

Apps are now catching up with normal tablet resolution; go for a higher resolution and you may still have issues. Having said that hopefully more developers now write their apps to be resolution-independent.
