The team over at Cnet have put together an interesting comparison of the smartphone operating systems now that Apples iOS 5 has been announced.
It makes for interesting reading.
It shows how Apple is realistically is behind the curve in terms of innovation, but more than likely will continue to have great success due to the adoption of the OS and the way in which the integrate such features.

Being an android fanboy, I woudn’t be doing my job if I didn’t stick up for google on this one..
first off, this ISN’T a like-for-like comparision, it’s an ‘IOS5′s new features’ vs everyone else comparsion; as that’s the case you may as well be comparing cars to jet-skis with critera like “number of cup holders” or “method of storing bicycles for travelling long distances” – it’s extremely biased – I’ve got a list as long as my arm of the number of features android supports that IOS doesn’t.
Second of all it’s comparing what’s a fictious operating system against real-world O/S’s – I can’t go and buy an IOS5 device off the shelf right now – hell, why not do a comparision with the next google OS (the one after Icecream sandwich) as that’ll probably be available before IOS5 is!
Next – the flaws that I can be bothered to point out..
Group messaging – er, hello – gtalk?
twitter sharing – authorise it via ‘intents’ and bingo – twitter is fully integrated in the O/S – ability to post (share) straight to your twitter timeline.
RRS newsfeeds – greader anyone?
Reminder Lists – gcalender?
I love the fact it compares iOS5 5 to BB OS 5 not OS 6 or 7.
How unfair can that get!
Some interesting points made on this one, thanks guys. Clearly it’s not the best comparison that could have been done, perhaps a more thorough and well thought out comparison would go down a lot better.
It doesn’t compare iOS 5 to BB OS 5. What it compares are different OS features’ first (historical) appearances.
