UK Samsung Galaxy S II will NOT feature NFC

Since some early reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S II surfaced in recent days there has been some conflicting information regarding the NFC (Near Field Communication) capabilities of the device – a feature that was advertised and since hinted at being territory specific. Some reports have stated that the NFC chip may be present but disabled via software to be released by a future upgrade.

We have spoke again today to those in charge of UK distribution and have had it confirmed that UK stock will NOT feature NFC as standard. Also there will  NOT be an NFC chip within the device so there will be no ‘software upgrade’ available in the future to enable this.

Some devices worldwide may feature the chip and rumour has it these units will be physically thicker. We have removed NFC from our website specification for the Samsung Galaxy S II and will be informing all customers with pre-orders about this development; providing the choice whether to continue with your order or not.

If you have an order for the Samsung Galaxy S II and wish to cancel due to this change in specification, contact us on sales@clove.co.uk

First stock of the Samsung Galaxy S II is still on course to ship to customers on May 3rd.

  1. So you guys do not check the actual specs of a device when you start advertising on your website?
If I hadn’t sent an email asking you to verify this info, would you guys even bother with it…
I would think that for a site charging a premium, you would at least take the initiative to get accurate information before publishing false advertisement on your website…

    • We will be contacting customers tomorrow to inform of the absense of NFC. It has only surfaced over the last day or so that there will be two different versions and we have done our best prior to launch to confirm the specs of the SGS2 – a Samsung UK Press Release around a fortnight ago stated that it would have NFC capability so we have had no reason to believe otherwise.

  2. Samsung wasn’t that honest on that one, very bad play on their part and I’m personally quite disappointed.

Even though it’s still a very good phone, leaving out NFC could prove quite bad for the growth of the technology.

  3. Zachi Gigi says:

I really don’t care as it’ll take enough time for the NFC technology to ‘catch’. By that time, I’ll upgrade my phone at least once.

  4. its not that good news.. T.T
    wht you mean 2 versions??
can it have NFC?? or its totally confirmed?

    • The UK/EU version that we will sell will NOT have NFC. Some other territories around the world may receive it, we have no confirmation on which these are

      • that will be good if it has NFC but i will go through with it even if it doesnt hav NFC. Still good phone.. and NFC… im not sure im goning to use it much so i will forget about it. haha Thanks for giving me good change to get this phone faster than otheres in my country. pleas ship it us as possible as you can. ^^
        Thank you!

  5. Please lower the price of this version!

    • Yes! or presents include, because NFC for me was the determining factor, after the screen and the processor. Samsung (or Clove?) does not nice lowering declared specification, while not changing the price. I was very upset.

  6. Very stupid behaviour of Samsung. Couple of days before shipping they change specifications and so on. I cannot imagine at least one month in advance before release date not to have information for actual release date, size of first batch, device specification, etc. It seems Samsung is not managing process and just things are what and happens. For me lack of NFC is deal breaker – if I’m going to pay such an amount for mobile phone (price of laptop actually) I would like it to be at good lever for at least two years! NFC is good technology and I expect rapid grow for it very soon!

  7. I’m kind of exasperated to hear that Samsung’s new +500 GBP flagship device doesn’t actually provide support for NFC (at least the UK version of the device). I know that NFC is still a premature technology but I’m sure its popularity will increase soon.

At least the Koreans got lucky, because the Galaxy S II version released in Korea does feature an NFC chip!

    • But they dont have game/music hurb and voice command function. Also 0.4mm thick.

      • To be honest, I rather have an S II that’s 4 mm thicker than not having an NFC chip integrated at all….

I’m sure the Koreans will be able to use customized roms for their rooted phones soon so that the can enjoy the hubs as well.

As mentioned earlier, it’s really unbelievable that Samsung change specifications a couple of days before the officially start shipping their devices.

Strangely, customer support of Amazon.de has confirmed that the German version of the S II will ship with an NFC chip integrated but I’m seriously wondering because the differences between the UK and the German should be marginal (if there are any differences at all….)

      • all amazon galaxys2 has NFC not only in German also UK. Hope that NFC positioned in UK as well…

  8. Hi,
Is it confirmed that the version you are selling comes with the Exynos CPU and Super Amoled plus screen? It’s just that there is talk of a Tegra 2 with Super LCD version. Thanks!

  9. Actually I am from south korea and even in korea, there are two different versions; one with NFC chip and another one w/o NFC chip. It is because some phone service companies wanted to put DMB feature(wireless TV) instead of NFC. I don’t know why they are exporting the one w/o NFC although nobody can use the DMB thing over here. This is very disappointing :(

    • Thanks for clearing that up!

    • No I dont think so, there is no relationship btw DMB and NFC. Both Korean version has DMB. And there is no DMB function in UK version. I can not understant “I don’t know why they are exporting the one w/o NFC although nobody can use the DMB thing over here.” Where you mean ‘here’?

      • oh because i’m an international student and i pre-ordered it in the UK. and i’m sorry, yeah both korean versions have dmb but still one has NFC but the other one does not have NFC. I guess the UK is importing the one w/o NFC

      • The UK version is totally different from the Korean version. The UK one does not have both DMB and NFC. But the thinkness and weight is also different. UK one has a slimmer design 8.49mm and 116g. Korean one is 8.89mm and 121g.

  10. Well, now that your stock is set to arrive the 4th instead of the 3rd, is it possible to upgrade shipping? Instead of 2-4 day, make it overnight to 2-day? That way it will match the delivery date we were originally led to believe?

One more thing, for us customers in the USA, will this phone support AT&T UMTS/3G bands? Earlier you confirmed it will work with AT&T voice and data network but didn’t specify if it was GSM or UMTS/3G or both.

    Thanks!

    • I would also like to know if I can upgrade to faster shipping.

I think the phone supports quad band UMTS.

      • I would also like to upgrade to faster shipping … Any updates on this?

      • Please send any enquiries about order amendments to sales@clove.co.uk. Please note however that there is only one standard of courier shipping available, if you have already selected courier shipping for your order then there is no need to amend it.

  11. Ray,

the Galaxy S II supports four different HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100 bandwidths, meaning it will definitely work with AT&T 3G/UMTS since the network of AT&T operates on the 850 and 1900 mhz bandwidths.

  12. Hi,I would know if when you send the order confirm by email it or not…and can I follow my order?(in Italy is possible throught a code

  13. testman says:

Can anybody clarifies the various version of the GSII ?
(the ones with NFC, the ones without, same for DMB, etc)

  14. I have spoke to Samsung the other day as my s2 was having a issue (all ok samsung replaced immediately no questions asked) I asked about nfc and was told that due to popularity nfc version will come out in about 2 months can this be confirmed please.

    • We are not aware of such plans. This would be unusual to release one with NFC now. More likely to see a replacement Samsung, a Galaxy S III with NFC but this is still to be confirmed.

  15. Will confirm as soon as we have retail stock in
