With the impending release of Samsung’s flagship Android device, we’ve been asked a few questions about technical specifications and release dates.
Unfortunately, we have heard from Samsung this afternoon that the release of the Galaxy S I9000 has now been delayed until the week commencing 14th June. This information has come direct from Samsung and the delay is beyond our control. We will do our best to ship all orders ASAP.
However, we have also got some good news that should soften this blow. We are now offering the 8GB version of the Galaxy S with a free 8GB MicroSD card, therefore making the overall memory of the device 16GB.
As you may or may not be aware, Samsung are offering versions of the Galaxy S with 8GB or 16GB Internal memory. The version with 16GB internal memory will be a network exclusive in the UK. We have therefore decided to rival this by including a free 8GB MicroSD card with the 8GB version that we are supplying.
What’s better, Internal or External Memory?
Honestly speaking, I’d say external memory. With internal memory, all your files (music, video, photos, etc) are stored to the device itself. With external memory, these files are stored to a MicroSD card.
However, storing your files to a MicroSD card does make it easier to transfer files between devices. A MicroSD card can easily be removed from one device and placed in another, with instant access to the files on the card. There are no cross-platform compatibility issues.
So, imagine you’ve got a load of photos stored on your SD card that you’re about to show to your friends/family, but your battery’s died. No problem, just take the SD card out and put it in someone else’s phone. Failing that, you can use a card reader to access the files on a PC or laptop. If these files had been stored on the devices internal memory, there would be no way to view them without recharging the device, which isn’t always possible if you haven’t got your charger to hand.
Again, imagine you’ve had your device for a year or two, built up 8GB worth of files, but have now decided to upgrade. If your files are all saved to an SD card, you just need to transfer that card to the new device, simple. If they’re saved to your phones internal memory, it could take hours or days to transfer them all. Even worse, if something happens to the device and you cannot access these files, they could be lost forever.
For the convenience of media storage, it does make sense to use an SD card rather than a devices internal memory. One point to be aware of is that Android 2.1 does install Apps to the devices internal memory, but this takes up very little space and you certainly wouldn’t require more than 1GB for this. Furthermore, Android 2.2 (which will likely be available for the Galaxy S in the coming months) will allow you to install apps to the SD card.
So overall, storage on a MicroSD card will give you more convenience. However, with our deal for the 8GB Internal memory + 8GB MicroSD card, you will have both forms of storage to make use of.

Jon,
I’ve passed the information on the revised release date & the MicroSD Card offer into the Forum’s ~ mainly at xda-devs & AndroidForums.
Greetings,
I have already pr-ordered the Phone prior to the announcement. I see now that there are two entries for the phone one is 8GB and the other is the 16GB (which is 8GB Internal + MicroSD). I hope Clove reassures the early orders of 8GB their status, will we get the 8GB MicroSD as well? Since removing the order and making another one seems redundant in that case and I wouldn’t want to trouble you with that.
Yes, this will be applied to your order.
