Smartphones being targeted by Cyercriminals

An article from the BBC is suggesting that cybercriminals are beginning to attack the smartphone user community.

Using scams that were commonly used in the days of dial up internet these scammers are leaving innocent victims with huge bills.

Used to call premium rate numbers, these ‘diallers’ are being increasingly reported to security companies who provide software and protection for smartphone devices.

Although each trojan virus works differently, one known as Swapi.B sends  premium rate SMS message, which leaves the user with heavy mobile bills without the users knowledge or consent.

There is no real solution other than to shut down the premium rate numbers – NOT POSSIBLE.

The full report, can be read here and goes into more detail on the topic.  Whilst it is not a big area of concern at the moment, it does raise questions around the security and vulnerability of the smartphone as more and more people adopt such devices.

  1. Just one more reason for me not to upgrade my phone just yet. I’m still waiting on the data rates to go down to the point where it is worth my time to get a Blackberry.

The same thing that happened to text message rates will eventually happen with general web browsing (which will cause even more viruses to spread, vicious cycle).
